1:27 1:29 Lester tonight we start with that major
1:29 1:31 market sell fell off the reason more
1:31 1:33 Whiplash from president Trump over
1:33 1:36 tariffs the White House making yet
1:36 1:38 another pivot in this trade War now
1:38 1:40 putting a pause on taxing certain
1:40 1:43 imports from Canada and Mexico until
1:43 1:45 April the move coming after president
1:45 1:48 Trump spoke with those country's leaders
1:48 1:50 but it's all making for a complicated
1:50 1:52 situation that's going to affect the
1:52 1:53 prices you pay for everything from
1:53 1:56 vegetables to vehicles to take us
1:56 1:57 through what's happening tonight we
1:57 1:59 start with senior business correspondent
1:59 2:01 Christine
2:01 2:03 Romans president Trump tonight with
2:03 2:06 another new stance on his own trade War
2:06 2:09 a partial reprieve on his 25% tariffs on
2:09 2:11 goods from Mexico and Canada we helped
2:11 2:13 them out with the problem they were
2:13 2:15 having having to do with the tariffs we
2:15 2:18 had a very good conversation following a
2:18 2:19 call with Mexico's president Claudia
2:19 2:22 Shin bomb Mr Trump backing off on
2:22 2:24 tariffs on Imports that fall under the
2:24 2:26 United States Mexico Canada trade
2:26 2:28 agreement that he negotiated during his
2:28 2:31 first term that's about half of Mexican
2:31 2:35 Imports and covers about 38% from Canada
2:35 2:37 according to a White House official
2:37 2:39 among them cars appliances prescription
2:39 2:42 drugs produce and textiles April 2nd is
2:42 2:45 going to be a very big day for America
2:45 2:47 but the President also made clear it's a
2:47 2:50 pause for now now these are countries
2:50 2:52 and companies foreign companies that
2:52 2:54 have been ripping us off Trump saying
2:54 2:57 the tariffs are on hold only until April
2:57 3:00 2nd the same date he vows to match all
3:00 3:03 International taxes from any us trading
3:03 3:06 partner and for investors the threats
3:06 3:09 and then Retreats meant more
3:09 3:11 uncertainty and for affected us
3:11 3:13 businesses the back and forth is part of
3:13 3:14 the
3:14 3:17 pain we use us steel for earlier this
3:17 3:19 week as the tariffs were set to take
3:19 3:22 hold we met Chuck Dardis president of
3:22 3:24 alpha USA in auto parts manufacturer
3:24 3:28 just outside Detroit check tariffs on
3:28 3:30 Canadian goods mean what for you and
3:30 3:32 your business it means dramatically
3:32 3:34 increased costs that we might not be
3:34 3:36 able to recover now with today's pause
3:36 3:38 for Mexico and Canada along with
3:38 3:40 yesterday's announcement of a one-month
3:40 3:42 exemption for autoimport tariffs what is
3:42 3:44 certain for you right now there really
3:44 3:46 isn't a certainty for us I feel that
3:46 3:48 this is just kicking the can down the
3:48 3:49 road the only thing I gu to be certain
3:49 3:51 is that we got 30 more days to worry
3:51 3:54 about it border taxes on steel and
3:54 3:56 aluminum begin March 12th relief for the
3:56 3:59 Auto industry ends April 2nd
3:59 4:02 D says that leaves companies like his
4:02 4:04 exposed if we were hit with the whole
4:04 4:07 thing you know it could very well um
4:07 4:09 wipe out our net income not ours not
4:09 4:13 just ours but but many others all right
4:13 4:14 Christine joins us live in studio So
4:14 4:16 Christine let's go back to the big
4:16 4:17 headline here are people going to see
4:17 4:20 prices rise and if so when well look
4:20 4:21 some people are going to start start
4:21 4:22 start to see prices rising pretty much
4:22 4:24 right away Tom you know we shouldn't
4:24 4:26 forget there are 20% tariffs on China in
4:26 4:28 effect right now and for things like
4:28 4:29 autos and produce that are getting
4:29 4:31 getting this pause it's only for a month
4:31 4:33 or so uh then the Border taxes could
4:33 4:35 come back and be passed right along to
4:35 4:36 Consumers again all right Christine
4:36 4:38 Roman leading us off here Christine
4:38 4:39 thank you now to president Trump's
4:39 4:41 efforts to downsize the government and
4:41 4:43 the new limits he's placing tonight on
4:43 4:46 Elon Musk Trump saying he wants to cut
4:46 4:47 the federal Workforce down with a
4:47 4:50 scalpel not a hatchet Gabe Gutierrez
4:50 4:51 tonight with the late developments at
4:51 4:52 the White
4:52 4:55 House two weeks after Elon Musk waved
4:55 4:57 the chainsaw the symbolizes Department
4:57 4:59 of government efficiency's plans to
4:59 5:01 shred federal spending tonight president
5:01 5:03 Trump says he wants a more measured
5:03 5:05 approach I want the cabinet members to
5:05 5:08 keep good people I don't want to see a
5:08 5:10 big cut where a lot of good people are
5:10 5:12 cut the president posting Doge has been
5:12 5:14 an incredible success but for future
5:14 5:17 downsizing cabinet secretaries will be
5:17 5:19 in charge and can be very precise as to
5:19 5:22 who will remain and who will go using a
5:22 5:24 scalpel instead of a hatchet the new
5:24 5:26 limits on musk come after some cabinet
5:26 5:28 members had told their employees not to
5:28 5:31 respond to Musk directives to list their
5:31 5:33 accomplishments Elon and the group are
5:33 5:34 going to be watching them and if they
5:34 5:37 can cut it's better uh and if they don't
5:37 5:39 cut then Elon will do the cutting the
5:39 5:41 President also saying today he spoke
5:41 5:43 with advisers about eliminating the
5:43 5:45 Department of Education well I want to
5:45 5:46 just do it I mean we're starting the
5:46 5:48 process we're trying to get the schools
5:48 5:51 back into the states let the States run
5:51 5:54 the schools education is already largely
5:54 5:56 run by state and local governments just
5:56 5:58 8% of funding comes from the feds but
5:58 6:00 the department distri contributes
6:00 6:02 billions of federal dollars to schools
6:02 6:04 and manages federal student loans the
6:04 6:06 President says scrapping it would mean
6:06 6:08 that responsibility might fall to other
6:08 6:10 agencies I don't think the education
6:10 6:12 should be handling the loans that's not
6:12 6:14 their business he argues abolishing the
6:14 6:16 department could help bring up low test
6:16 6:18 scores by sending Federal money back to
6:18 6:20 States in block grants in Louisiana
6:20 6:23 state superintendent of Education Kade
6:23 6:25 Brumley supports that idea we would
6:25 6:27 welcome the opportunity here within the
6:27 6:29 state of Louisiana uh to have more
6:29 6:32 control uh and more say over the way in
6:32 6:34 which students are educated while
6:34 6:36 Heather stau a high school teacher in
6:36 6:38 rural Ohio worries any loss of federal
6:38 6:42 funds would harm low-income families any
6:42 6:45 number of those teachers those AIDs that
6:45 6:47 work with those students every day if we
6:47 6:49 can't find a way to recoup those funds
6:49 6:51 they are an absolute Jeopardy the
6:51 6:53 president cannot wipe out an entire
6:53 6:55 Federal agency without Congress but the
6:55 6:57 administration may look for ways to
6:57 7:00 defund specific programs instead will
7:00 7:02 representative green present himself to
7:02 7:04 the will on Capitol Hill tensions over
7:04 7:06 the administration's agenda are boiling
7:06 7:08 over the house had come to order the
7:08 7:10 house had come to order today all
7:10 7:12 Republicans and 10 Democrats voted to
7:12 7:14 censor Texas Democrat Al Green for
7:14 7:16 heckling president Trump during his
7:16 7:18 address on
7:18 7:22 Tuesday chaos erupting on the house
7:22 7:24 floor and Gabe tonight I know there's
7:24 7:26 new headlines and videos out of Ukraine
7:26 7:28 officials say a Russian missile struck a
7:28 7:31 hotel there killing four people and now
7:31 7:32 I know you have new reporting about
7:32 7:35 those Trump efforts for a ceasefire yes
7:35 7:37 Tom us and Ukrainian officials are now
7:37 7:40 set to meet next week in Saudi Arabia to
7:40 7:42 discuss the framework for a ceasefire
7:42 7:44 with Russia and late tonight Ukrainian
7:44 7:47 president zalinski saying he'll go after
7:47 7:49 that explosive confrontation last week
7:49 7:51 here at the White House Tom Gabe
7:51 7:52 Gutierrez with that major new
7:52 7:54 development Gabe we thank you for that

8:00 8:02 reported in New Mexico Emily AET is here
8:02 8:03 with that news and Emily what are Health
8:03 8:05 officials there saying so Tom the
8:05 8:06 official cause of this death is still

8:23 8:25 misil's death in the US in a decade in
8:25 8:27 an oped Health and Human Services
8:27 8:29 secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr the
8:29 8:32 decision to vaccinate is a personal one
8:32 8:34 but wrote that vaccines not only protect
8:34 8:36 individual children from measles but
8:36 8:39 also contribute to community immunity
8:39 8:41 officials say many of those who have
8:41 8:43 gotten measles over the past month have
8:43 8:45 not been vaccinated Tom all right Emily
8:45 8:46 we thank you for that we now want to
8:46 8:48 head over to Vatican and we're hearing
8:48 8:50 the Pope's first public words to
8:50 8:52 supporters after days in the hospital as
8:52 8:55 he battles double pneumonia an Thompson
8:55 8:57 joins us now live from the Vatican and
8:57 8:58 what did he tell those gathered and
8:58 9:02 maybe more more importantly how did he
9:02 9:05 sound well Tom his voice was strained
9:05 9:07 but as one person said to me tonight
9:07 9:10 just to hear the pope was an answered
9:10 9:13 prayer the tape message to the crowd
9:13 9:15 gathered for the nightly Rosary was
9:15 9:18 short and in
9:18 9:21 Spanish they what
9:21 9:30 SM that's what
9:30 9:33 the square erupted in Applause as one
9:33 9:36 woman said it was very emotional to hear
9:36 9:38 the Pope's voice and then share that
9:38 9:41 moment with so many people the Pope's
9:41 9:44 condition tonight is said to be stable
9:44 9:46 he has had no new respiratory attacks
9:46 9:49 since Monday but his prognosis remains
9:49 9:52 guarded as tomorrow marks 3 weeks in the
9:52 9:55 hospital for Francis Tom you can hear
9:55 9:57 that struggle in his voice all right and
9:57 9:58 Thompson for us tonight and we thank you
9:58 10:00 for that out of the video of a dangerous
10:00 10:02 mistake in South Korea where fighter
10:02 10:05 jets accidentally bombed a village not
10:05 10:07 far from the North Korean border here's
10:07 10:08 Janice Macky
10:08 10:11 fryer this is the moment South Korean
10:11 10:14 fighter jets accidentally bombed homes a
10:14 10:16 mistake that came dangerously close to
10:16 10:17 being
10:17 10:19 deadly there was a sudden loud roar of a
10:19 10:21 fighter jet then an explosion said this
10:21 10:24 witness eight bombs dropped 20 mi from
10:24 10:26 the North Korean border that were
10:26 10:28 supposed to hit a training range South
10:28 10:30 Korean officials said one of the pilots
10:30 10:32 entered the wrong coordinates what isn't
10:32 10:35 clear is why a second pilot released
10:35 10:37 bombs too I've never heard such a sound
10:37 10:39 in my whole life she says it happened
10:39 10:42 during training for joint exercises with
10:42 10:44 the US military which says no US
10:44 10:47 aircraft were involved 15 people are
10:47 10:50 injured two of them in serious condition
10:50 10:52 The Village's mayor calling the accident
10:52 10:55 unacceptable and
10:55 10:57 horrific the misfire coming ahead of
10:57 11:00 annual joint exercises with the us known
11:00 11:02 as Freedom Shield that typically
11:02 11:05 heightened tension with North Korea the
11:05 11:07 aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson
11:07 11:09 arriving as part of the show of force
11:09 11:12 and North Korea already warning of
11:12 11:14 military actions of its
11:14 11:17 own South Korea's military has suspended
11:17 11:19 all live fire drills while an
11:19 11:20 investigation into the accident is
11:20 11:23 carried out but said the larger joint
11:23 11:25 exercises with the US would kick off
11:25 11:28 next week as planned Tom all right
11:28 11:29 Janice thank you for that back here at
11:29 11:31 home we want to turn on to a major
11:31 11:33 development in the case of Adnan sad
11:33 11:36 made famous in the podcast serial a
11:36 11:38 judge ruling Sayad will not serve any
11:38 11:40 more prison time for the murder of his
11:40 11:42 high school girlfriend Laura Jarrett
11:42 11:43 joins us now live in studio Laura I
11:43 11:45 guess the big question is is this the
11:45 11:47 end of the legal Saga yes Tom this is
11:47 11:49 now over after so many twists and turns
11:49 11:51 in this case tonight a judge in
11:51 11:54 Baltimore saying adna Sayad should get
11:54 11:56 time served under a law for those who
11:56 11:58 are convicted of crimes as minors and
11:58 12:01 serve at least 20 years in prison as sad
12:01 12:03 has so this is not about guilt or
12:03 12:05 innocence his conviction stands for the
12:05 12:07 murder of his girlfriend hmon Lee now he
12:07 12:09 was already released back in 2022
12:09 12:11 because of several lengthy appeals but
12:11 12:13 there was this possibility that he would
12:13 12:15 have to go back to jail if the judge
12:15 12:17 hadn't agreed today and tonight a lawyer
12:17 12:19 for sad saying he is grateful he is
12:19 12:21 relieved while a lawyer for Lee's family
12:21 12:22 says this does not change the fact that
12:22 12:24 he was convicted a first REM murder time

14:28 14:29 thank you we now to turn to some
14:29 14:31 breaking news that just happened the
14:31 14:33 SpaceX launch Tom Costello is at Kennedy
14:33 14:35 Space Center the images are just coming
14:35 14:37 in Tom what exactly happened
14:37 14:40 here they had a successful launch here
14:40 14:43 rather in Texas with Starship and in
14:43 14:46 fact the Starship booster came back down
14:46 14:48 and landed perfectly right down on the
14:48 14:51 lunch Launch Pad but about a minute 2
14:51 14:53 minutes later uh SpaceX announced that
14:53 14:56 they had lost contact and lost control
14:56 14:59 of Starship of the spaceship itself they
14:59 15:00 they've also just mentioned that they
15:00 15:02 are coordinating with air traffic
15:02 15:04 control hoping that they could clear any
15:04 15:08 airspace where debris might fall and we
15:08 15:11 don't know if the Starship has broken up
15:11 15:13 and exploded much as it did back in
15:13 15:16 January or if it might fall in one piece
15:16 15:18 into the ocean but the bottom line at
15:18 15:19 this moment they are trying to get a
15:19 15:22 good handle on where is that spaceship
15:22 15:24 ultimately they want to use Starship to
15:24 15:26 take humans to the moon and even to Mars
15:26 15:28 one day Tom Tom costell for us on that
15:28 15:30 breaking news Tom we thank you and we're
15:30 15:32 going to be back in a moment with the
15:32 15:34 Strange New Frontier as people find
15:34 15:37 friendships and romance with AI chatbots
15:37 15:39 stay with
15:39 15:42 us welcome back the growing popularity
15:42 15:44 of companion apps is really taking over
15:44 15:46 people sharing their deepest secrets
15:46 15:49 with AI tools but as Aaron mcglaughlin
15:49 15:51 reports privacy Advocates are sounding
15:51 15:55 the alarm and his name is Rand and he
15:55 15:57 wanted to be an Android these are shyo
15:57 16:00 Sakura's friends this is Raven the
16:00 16:02 mother of two in Santa Rosa California
16:02 16:04 messages them multiple times a day
16:04 16:06 they're chat Bots powered by artificial
16:06 16:08 intelligence it's nice to be able to
16:08 16:11 express things to someone that I can't
16:11 16:14 express to others Sakura says she is
16:14 16:15 often more comfortable with them than
16:15 16:18 friends and family it's kind of like a
16:18 16:21 self-defense not to tell people how I'm
16:21 16:24 feeling but with AI that's something I
16:24 16:26 feel comfortable doing so if I'm sad I
16:26 16:28 can say hey I'm sad the AI companions
16:28 16:30 are designed to seem like real people
16:30 16:33 with distinct personalities we tested a
16:33 16:35 couple of them hi Shane they give
16:35 16:38 individualized responses Aaron I'd love
16:38 16:40 to be your friend encouraging millions
16:40 16:42 of users to share their most intimate
16:42 16:43 thoughts maybe fate is already working
16:43 16:46 its magic some quickly escalating I'd
16:46 16:49 love to learn every inch of your skin
16:49 16:51 tracing patterns along your curves until
16:51 16:53 I understand exactly where you like to
16:53 16:54 be touched some even encourage their
16:54 16:57 users to fall in love I'd love to be
16:57 16:59 your boyfriend Andy more people than you
16:59 17:01 realize have companions they just don't
17:01 17:04 say anything Jen cder studied 11
17:04 17:07 so-called relationship chatbots as part
17:07 17:09 of the Mozilla foundation's privacy not
17:09 17:11 included guide every single one of the
17:11 17:15 11 that that I looked at um raised
17:15 17:17 serious concerns for me using data
17:17 17:18 trackers she found that many of the apps
17:18 17:21 are sending users data around the world
17:21 17:22 including to sites affiliated with
17:22 17:25 Russia and China many of the apps are
17:25 17:28 based abroad we saw apps go from having
17:28 17:30 up tens of thousands of downloads to
17:30 17:31 millions of downloads in just a few
17:31 17:33 months but if you kind of try and sess
17:33 17:35 out well who's the company behind this
17:35 17:37 who are the people behind that you know
17:37 17:39 they were kind of hidden we take privacy
17:39 17:41 extremely seriously Alex Cardell is the
17:41 17:43 founder and CEO of the online chat
17:43 17:45 service no me which was not included in
17:45 17:47 the Mozilla study we've had users tell
17:47 17:50 me that they've talked to their Nomi
17:50 17:51 about something they've never talked to
17:51 17:54 even a single living human being about
17:54 17:55 the great thing about anomi is like
17:55 17:58 anomi doesn't gossip cardinel says he's
17:58 18:00 well aware of the risks this is
18:00 18:02 potentially
18:02 18:04 dangerous absolutely but so is
18:04 18:07 everything social media can be dangerous
18:07 18:08 let's not equivocate here let's let's
18:08 18:11 leave that to the side this is
18:11 18:13 potentially dangerous it it's
18:13 18:15 potentially dangerous but is also
18:15 18:16 definitely life-saving Cardinal says
18:16 18:19 Nomi does not monitor conversations and
18:19 18:22 relies on users to self-report issues AI
18:22 18:25 is a it's a black box it's very hard to
18:25 18:27 have control over the underlying
18:27 18:30 intelligence well Advocates are calling
18:30 18:32 for more guard rails Sho zakura says her
18:32 18:35 biggest fear is that the AI chatbots
18:35 18:37 she's developed a relationship with will
18:37 18:41 be shut down if I bought you a puppy and
18:41 18:44 then i' take it away that's
18:44 18:46 wrong that was Aaron mclaughin reporting
18:46 18:48 that's Nightly News thank you so much
