0:00 0:03 tonight the end of the Hollywood writers
0:03 0:05 strike the new details we're learning
0:05 0:07 about the tentative deal and why it
0:07 0:08 doesn't mean your favorite shows are
0:08 0:11 coming back so fast here are tonight's
0:11 0:12 headlines
0:12 0:16 the gains and concessions after a nearly
0:16 0:18 five-month strike that has cost the U.S
0:18 0:20 economy more than 5 billion dollars I
0:20 0:22 would like to go back to work I really
0:22 0:24 do hope it's over and a look tonight at
0:24 0:26 what a deal means for other ongoing
0:26 0:28 strikes
0:28 0:31 Senator Bob Menendez remains defiant in
0:31 0:33 the face of mountain calls from members
0:33 0:35 of his own party for him to step down
0:35 0:37 from Congress not only will I be
0:37 0:39 exonerated
0:39 0:41 but I still will be the New Jersey's
0:41 0:43 senior senator terrifying moments aboard
0:43 0:45 a flight to Fort Lauderdale as severe
0:45 0:47 turbulence sends eight people to the
0:47 0:50 hospital the new details
0:50 0:53 pretty bad the emotional return to
0:53 0:55 Lahaina we're there as some residents
0:55 0:57 see what's left of their homes for the
0:57 1:00 first time since the Maui wildfires at
1:00 1:01 least a dozen people return home today
1:01 1:04 many discovering scenes like this
1:04 1:08 they're upside down nightmare in
1:08 1:10 Wonderland as writers at an amusement
1:10 1:13 park are stuck upside down for nearly 30
1:13 1:15 minutes
1:15 1:17 if you've driven the nation's
1:17 1:19 interstates you've probably seen
1:19 1:21 something like this a big rig parked
1:21 1:23 along an off-ramp there are big safety
1:23 1:26 questions being raised about where those
1:26 1:33 big rigs should Park
1:33 1:35 good evening to our viewers in the west
1:35 1:37 and thank you for joining us as we begin
1:37 1:39 a new week together we want to begin
1:39 1:40 tonight with one of the longest
1:40 1:43 Hollywood strikes in history coming to a
1:43 1:44 possible end with the writer's Guild of
1:44 1:47 America and the major Studios agreeing
1:47 1:49 to a tentative deal the potential
1:49 1:50 agreement announced late last Night
1:50 1:52 Comes nearly five months since
1:52 1:55 production came to a standstill What
1:55 1:57 followed was months of bitter talks
1:57 1:59 picket lines and round-the-clock
1:59 2:01 negotiations over demands including
2:01 2:03 residuals and the use of artificial
2:03 2:06 intelligence now the terms are not yet
2:06 2:08 known but in an email to members the wga
2:08 2:10 said the deal had meaningful gains and
2:10 2:13 protections for writers members of the
2:13 2:14 Union still need to ratify the new
2:14 2:17 contract so writers won't be returning
2:17 2:19 to work immediately attention now turns
2:19 2:21 the ongoing stride of members of The
2:21 2:23 Screen Actors Guild with many of the
2:23 2:26 same issues on the line cbs's Elise
2:26 2:28 Preston will start us off tonight from a
2:28 2:30 Studio Lot in Los Angeles good evening
2:30 2:31 Elise
2:31 2:34 Nora good evening to you after
2:34 2:37 146 days of walking the picket line
2:37 2:39 writers are expected to ratify this deal
2:39 2:42 within the coming weeks but with actors
2:42 2:44 on strike there's still no Hollywood
2:44 2:47 ending
2:47 2:50 picket signs are coming down but don't
2:50 2:52 expect the curtain to rise anytime soon
2:52 2:54 for your favorite shows while the
2:54 2:56 writers have reached a deal it still
2:56 2:58 must be ratified by the Guild's 11 000
2:58 3:02 members and more than 160 000 actors are
3:02 3:05 still without a contract the wga calls
3:05 3:07 its three-year deal exceptional it
3:07 3:10 includes concessions on royalty payments
3:10 3:12 for streaming and protecting writers
3:12 3:14 from being replaced by AI two of the
3:14 3:16 main sticking points of a strike that
3:16 3:18 has cost the industry more than 5
3:18 3:21 billion dollars the First shows Force
3:21 3:23 off the air late night talk shows will
3:23 3:25 likely be the first programs to return
3:25 3:29 perhaps as early as next week what do we
3:29 3:32 want the Riders and actors walkouts have
3:32 3:35 shown strong solidarity notably in the
3:35 3:37 many job actions seen in this summer of
3:37 3:40 strikes what does this mean for everyone
3:40 3:43 else we are in a labor moment we had
3:43 3:44 dual Hollywood strikes for the first
3:44 3:46 time in 63 years we have the Auto
3:46 3:49 Workers out almost at UPS out workers
3:49 3:53 even non-unionized workers are sick and
3:53 3:54 tired and have found a straw that broke
3:54 3:56 their back in terms of income inequality
3:56 3:58 in this country it was only last week
3:58 4:00 that student video heads were brought in
4:00 4:02 to try to end the strike that lasted
4:02 4:05 nearly five months are you surprised
4:05 4:08 that it took this long it really is a
4:08 4:10 dereliction of Duty the studio heads sat
4:10 4:12 on their Yachts they went to billionaire
4:12 4:15 summer camps and they allowed working
4:15 4:18 people to go without jobs to walk on the
4:18 4:20 picket line and to wonder how they were
4:20 4:22 going to put food on the table that's
4:22 4:24 outrageous
4:24 4:26 with the ongoing actors strike your
4:26 4:28 favorite shows May not return until next
4:28 4:31 year and even then there still could be
4:31 4:33 more trouble ahead labor actions for
4:33 4:36 other industry jobs are looming Nora
4:36 4:38 Lee's Preston with this important story
4:38 4:39 thank you
4:39 4:41 we are hearing tonight for the first
4:41 4:43 time from Senator Robert Menendez just
4:43 4:45 days after he was indicted for a
4:45 4:47 wide-ranging corruption scheme the
4:47 4:49 powerful Democrat is accused of taking
4:49 4:51 hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash
4:51 4:54 and luxury gifts to help New Jersey
4:54 4:55 businessmen and the government of Egypt
4:55 4:58 CBS Nicole Killian spoke with his
4:58 4:59 constituents as calls for his
4:59 5:02 resignation are growing today
5:02 5:05 tonight New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez
5:05 5:07 says he's bracing for his biggest fight
5:07 5:10 yet and showed no signs of backing down
5:10 5:12 I firmly believe that when all the facts
5:12 5:14 are presented not only will I be
5:14 5:17 exonerated but I still will be the New
5:17 5:19 Jersey's senior senator flanked by a
5:19 5:21 handful of supporters the Democratic
5:21 5:26 lawmaker took no questions
5:26 5:28 as he responded publicly to a
5:28 5:30 three-count indictment filed last week
5:30 5:33 against the senator his wife and three
5:33 5:35 New Jersey business associates the
5:35 5:36 senator is accused of using his
5:36 5:38 political influence on the powerful
5:38 5:40 Foreign Relations Committee to take
5:40 5:43 thousands of dollars in bribes including
5:43 5:45 mortgage payments to his wife a luxury
5:45 5:49 car 13 bars of gold and around five
5:49 5:51 hundred thousand dollars in cash with
5:51 5:52 some of the money stuffed in
5:52 5:54 Congressional jackets bearing his name
5:54 5:58 for 30 years I have withdrawn thousands
5:58 6:00 of dollars in cash from my personal
6:00 6:02 savings account
6:02 6:04 which I have kept for emergencies and
6:04 6:06 because of the history of my family
6:06 6:09 facing confiscation in Cuba Menendez
6:09 6:10 claimed over the weekend that his
6:10 6:12 critics were rushing to judge a Latino
6:12 6:15 something disputed by fellow democratic
6:15 6:18 congresswoman Alexandria ocasio-cortez
6:18 6:21 you know as a Latina there are
6:21 6:23 absolutely ways in which there is
6:23 6:25 systemic bias but I think what is here
6:25 6:27 in this indictment is quite clear New
6:27 6:29 Jersey governor Phil Murphy is called
6:29 6:32 for Menendez immediate resignation and
6:32 6:33 close to half of New Jersey's
6:33 6:35 Congressional Delegation believes he
6:35 6:37 should step down that includes
6:37 6:39 Congressman Andy Kim who announced he
6:39 6:42 will primary the three-term senator next
6:42 6:45 year I am very concerned that if Senator
6:45 6:48 Menendez continues on that he could put
6:48 6:51 this seat in jeopardy
6:51 6:53 at least two Senate Democrats say
6:53 6:55 Menendez should leave off as the White
6:55 6:57 House stopped short of calling for his
6:57 6:58 resignation and here in New Jersey
6:58 7:01 fellow Senator Cory Booker has not
7:01 7:04 weighed in Nora Nicole Killian thank you
7:04 7:06 there were some terrifying moments today
7:06 7:09 aboard a JetBlue flight from Ecuador to
7:09 7:11 Fort Lauderdale when it hits severe
7:11 7:13 turbulence the flight landed safely but
7:13 7:15 seven passengers and a crew member were
7:15 7:17 sent to the hospital for evaluation and
7:17 7:19 treatment the plane was taken out of
7:19 7:21 service for inspection
7:21 7:23 now to some lingering weather problems
7:23 7:25 caused by the remnants of tropical storm
7:25 7:27 Ophelia the storm will latch the East
7:27 7:29 Coast over the weekend with strong winds
7:29 7:31 and up to 10 inches of rain from North
7:31 7:33 Carolina to the Jersey Shore while the
7:33 7:35 worst is behind us States up and down
7:35 7:38 the coast are in store for more Stormy
7:38 7:40 Weather so for all that let's bring in
7:40 7:41 meteorologist Alex Wilson from our
7:41 7:43 partners at The Weather Channel good
7:43 7:45 evening Alex
7:45 7:46 well Nora it's going to be a pretty
7:46 7:48 tough week on the East Coast as
7:48 7:50 conditions remain unsettled particularly
7:50 7:52 at those areas along the beaches we've
7:52 7:54 got the remnant circulation of Ophelia
7:54 7:56 that will linger keep rain showers
7:56 7:57 around stronger high pressure to the
7:57 7:59 north that's going to lead to an
7:59 8:00 increasing pressure gradient strong
8:00 8:03 winds and an onshore flow so you can
8:03 8:05 expect increased waves dangerous rip
8:05 8:07 currents and Gusty winds to continue
8:07 8:09 along the east coast up and down the
8:09 8:11 east coast along with rain showers
8:11 8:12 through the middle even end part of the
8:12 8:14 week so wet weather will linger along
8:14 8:16 with those winds expect dreary weather
8:16 8:18 again from the Mid-Atlantic to the
8:18 8:20 Northeast even the Ohio Valley getting
8:20 8:21 in on some of those showers and
8:21 8:23 thunderstorms towards the second half of
8:23 8:24 the week atmospheric River events
8:24 8:26 setting up Nora this is going to bring
8:26 8:27 some much needed rain to parts of the
8:27 8:29 Pacific Northwest where they've been
8:29 8:31 dealing with drought and fires Alex
8:31 8:34 thank you some residents of the hardest
8:34 8:35 hit part of Maui are finally being
8:35 8:37 allowed to return to their properties in
8:37 8:39 Lahaina more than a month after a
8:39 8:41 catastrophic wildfires destroyed the
8:41 8:43 area and left at least 97 people dead
8:43 8:46 cbs's Jonathan vigil was back in the
8:46 8:48 disaster Zone today along with families
8:48 8:51 struggling to cope with their loss
8:51 8:53 it's been nearly seven weeks since
8:53 8:55 residents in lahaina's fire ravaged
8:55 8:57 disaster Zone have been allowed to
8:57 9:01 return home pretty bad
9:01 9:04 after so many years of living here for
9:04 9:06 many like norian Wales and her
9:06 9:08 granddaughter Tawny to be back was
9:08 9:10 overwhelming we need to see it in person
9:10 9:13 we need to go and stand on our property
9:13 9:16 and see you know what's left and
9:16 9:18 process that at least a dozen people
9:18 9:20 return home today many discovering
9:20 9:22 scenes like this but they were the lucky
9:22 9:24 ones we're told at least one person in
9:24 9:26 the neighborhood was unable to escape
9:26 9:28 the Flames alive she 'll gin's home
9:28 9:32 survived sorry I get a little choked up
9:32 9:34 sometimes about it just yeah I
9:34 9:36 understand because it's just so horrible
9:36 9:39 and the fact that I made it is you know
9:39 9:41 just the luck the way the wind was blown
9:41 9:44 basically Hogan a contractor by trade
9:44 9:46 estimates it will take at least a decade
9:46 9:50 to rebuild the town Pablo pegdalel III
9:50 9:52 among the names added to the long row of
9:52 9:55 crosses each one a family member lost in
9:55 9:58 the fire Peg dillau who was partially
9:58 10:00 paralyzed died while trying to flee the
10:00 10:03 fire by car with his wife Nelda the
10:03 10:04 Flames blocked their exit on Front
10:04 10:07 Street and Nelda couldn't carry her
10:07 10:09 husband over the sea wall to safety
10:09 10:10 unfortunately
10:10 10:14 the fire got really close and
10:14 10:16 my grandma did whatever she could she
10:16 10:18 did not give up but my grandpa told her
10:18 10:21 go just leave me just go find the family
10:21 10:25 go and go take care of yourself and them
10:25 10:28 heartbreak and a long road to recovery
10:28 10:30 ahead officials say it could take just a
10:30 10:32 year alone to remove all of the rubble's
10:32 10:35 700 000 tons and to give you some
10:35 10:36 perspective that's about half the amount
10:36 10:38 removed from the World Trade Center site
10:38 10:40 after 9 11 Nora
10:40 10:43 Jonathan Vigliotti thank you you for all
10:43 10:44 your reporting from there
10:44 10:46 turning now to the crisis at the border
10:46 10:48 tonight CBS News can report that more
10:48 10:51 than 9 000 migrants were apprehended at
10:51 10:53 the border just yesterday the mayor of
10:53 10:55 El Paso says his city is reaching a
10:55 10:57 Breaking Point with more than 2 000
10:57 11:00 migrants arriving per day a dozen buses
11:00 11:02 of migrants pulled into Chicago over the
11:02 11:04 weekend America's third largest city is
11:04 11:07 now spending 29 million dollars to set
11:07 11:09 up winterized tent camps for the
11:09 11:10 migrants
11:10 11:13 turning overseas Ukraine says it killed
11:13 11:14 the commander of Russia's Black Sea
11:14 11:17 Fleet in a missile Strike last week the
11:17 11:19 attack targeted the Russian Navy's
11:19 11:22 headquarters in Crimea the claim comes
11:22 11:23 as president zielinski announced today
11:23 11:25 that his forces have received
11:25 11:28 much-needed U.S Abrams Tanks saying
11:28 11:31 they're being prepared for battle
11:31 11:33 back here at home time is running out to
11:33 11:35 avoid a government shutdown house
11:35 11:37 Speaker Kevin McCarthy is facing an
11:37 11:39 uphill battle with his own fellow
11:39 11:41 Republicans while President Biden says
11:41 11:43 the GOP should live up to its budget
11:43 11:46 deal cbs's Ouija Jang is at the White
11:46 11:47 House she's got the latest good evening
11:47 11:49 Ouija what do we learn good evening Nora
11:49 11:51 well tonight the White House is calling
11:51 11:53 this a republican shutdown and warns
11:53 11:55 that without a solution at least 4
11:55 11:58 million federal workers won't get paid
11:58 12:01 food safety inspections could be delayed
12:01 12:03 and cancer research could be stalled
12:03 12:05 this afternoon President Biden said the
12:05 12:08 cuts would disproportionately impact the
12:08 12:10 black community and put food assistance
12:10 12:13 to 7 million Women and Children at Risk
12:13 12:16 he also put the blame squarely on the
12:16 12:18 group of far-right Republicans who are
12:18 12:19 holding out on funding the government
12:19 12:22 because they want deep spending cuts
12:22 12:25 house Speaker Kevin McCarthy has failed
12:25 12:27 numerous times now to convince those
12:27 12:30 lawmakers to compromise a task that may
12:30 12:32 be even tougher now that former
12:32 12:34 president Donald Trump is urging
12:34 12:36 conservatives today to shut down the
12:36 12:38 government if they don't get quote
12:38 12:41 everything they want Nora Ouija Zhang
12:41 12:43 thank you very much tonight the national
12:43 12:45 Transportation safety board is looking
12:45 12:47 into a hidden Danger on America's
12:47 12:50 highways the Nationwide shortage of rest
12:50 12:52 stop space for large trucks results in
12:52 12:54 many drivers parking on the sides of
12:54 12:56 off-ramps sometimes with deadly
12:56 12:59 consequences cbs's Chris Van Cleave goes
12:59 13:01 in depth on the dangers and the calls
13:01 13:03 for change
13:03 13:06 Mario Gonzalez died on his way home from
13:06 13:08 visiting family in July when his pickup
13:08 13:10 slammed into the back of a semi parked
13:10 13:11 on the side of the road through a rest
13:11 13:14 stop off Interstate 37 South of San
13:14 13:16 Antonio it was dark and the truck did
13:16 13:18 not have lights on
13:18 13:21 his daughter Lori losing him has left
13:21 13:22 the hole in our family
13:22 13:25 to hold it nothing's going to fill
13:25 13:28 Gonzalez was speeding before hitting the
13:28 13:30 brakes seconds before the impact his
13:30 13:32 family is now suing the trucking company
13:32 13:34 which denies any wrongdoing it doesn't
13:34 13:36 take a lot of professional experience to
13:36 13:39 understand the dangers of an 18-wheeler
13:39 13:41 parked on a roadway at night in the dark
13:41 13:44 Gonzalez died two days after a
13:44 13:45 hauntingly similar crash in Illinois
13:45 13:47 killed three when a Greyhound bus hit
13:47 13:49 several big rigs parked along a rest
13:49 13:51 stop Access Road the trucking industry
13:51 13:53 says drivers are forced to park in such
13:53 13:55 places because there's only one parking
13:55 13:57 space for every 11 trucks on the
13:57 14:00 nation's roads CBS News found big rigs
14:00 14:02 parked on freeway and rest stop
14:02 14:04 shoulders across the country and
14:04 14:06 crowding roads into rest stops already
14:06 14:08 full of parked trucks investigators for
14:08 14:10 the Gonzalez family shot this video of
14:10 14:12 the rest stop where Mario died jammed
14:12 14:14 with trucks on both sides of the road
14:14 14:17 laws vary by state but Texas does not
14:17 14:20 prohibit parking on the shoulder how
14:20 14:21 find a place to park for one of these
14:21 14:24 things it can be from
14:24 14:25 a small percent of the time to
14:25 14:28 impossible a large percent of the time
14:28 14:30 Danny schnauz president of Clark freight
14:30 14:32 lines in Houston says the lack of
14:32 14:33 parking coupled with strict drive time
14:33 14:36 rules forces truckers into unsafe
14:36 14:38 situations what do you tell your drivers
14:38 14:41 about this issue of parking like on and
14:41 14:43 off ramp well first of all we have to be
14:43 14:46 safe so we tell drivers to realize that
14:46 14:48 cutting their day short is better than
14:48 14:49 putting someone in an unsafe position
14:49 14:52 nationally in 2020 there were four
14:52 14:54 thousand injury accidents involving big
14:54 14:56 rigs near Interstate on and off ramps
14:56 14:59 another 55 were fatal Transportation
14:59 15:01 secretary Pete butterjudge this is not
15:01 15:03 just a quality of life issue for truck
15:03 15:05 drivers who deserve a good convenient
15:05 15:07 safe place to park but also it's a
15:07 15:09 safety issue for the entire system the
15:09 15:10 Department of Transportation is
15:10 15:12 providing grants to expand truck parking
15:12 15:15 in several States while a bill giving
