tonight it's a deal lawmakers avert a
0:06 0:08 shutdown passing a short-term spending
0:08 0:10 Bill to keep the government open for
0:10 0:12 business will have all the late details
0:12 0:14 from Capitol Hill the bill is passed and
0:14 0:15 with that objection the motion to
0:15 0:18 reconsider is laid on the
0:18 0:21 table also tonight strike deadline
0:21 0:24 medical workers across the country
0:24 0:26 threatening what would be the largest
0:26 0:28 healthc care strike in US history I'm
0:28 0:30 Tom way in Los Angeles the strike would
0:30 0:32 impact five States including here in
0:32 0:34 California where medical support staff
0:34 0:37 says extreme understaffing is putting
0:37 0:39 lives at
0:39 0:43 risk plus car hacked thieves going
0:43 0:46 Hightech to steal your vehicle in under
0:46 0:48 a minute we'll show you how it's done
0:48 0:52 and how you can stop it iPhone fix what
0:52 0:54 Apple's doing after customer complaints
0:54 0:58 their new iPhones are too hot to
0:58 1:01 handle
1:01 1:04 this is the CBS weekend news from
1:04 1:06 Washington with Adriana
1:06 1:09 Diaz good evening we begin tonight in
1:09 1:11 Washington where with just hours to
1:11 1:13 spare before a midnight deadline
1:13 1:15 Congress has reached an agreement to
1:15 1:17 avert a government shutdown this
1:17 1:19 afternoon the house passed a short-term
1:19 1:21 spending bill that provides funding to
1:21 1:24 federal agencies for 45 days the measure
1:24 1:27 was later approved by the Senate and the
1:27 1:29 line of cars waiting outside the capital
1:29 1:30 suggested to the media that the vote
1:30 1:33 would be quick cbs's Scott McFarland is
1:33 1:36 on Capitol Hill with the latest Scott
1:36 1:38 one Congressman described it as college
1:38 1:40 students waiting till the last minute to
1:40 1:42 cram for an exam the US House passed a
1:42 1:45 45-day extension of keeping the
1:45 1:47 government open the Senate followed suit
1:47 1:50 after a day of scrambling and
1:50 1:52 compromise with millions of federal
1:52 1:54 workers from military bases to TSA
1:54 1:56 checkpoints to government medical
1:56 1:58 facilities poised to lose their
1:58 1:59 paychecks when the Clock Struck midnight
1:59 2:02 night the US House tried to hit the
2:02 2:03 snooze button and agreed to a brief
2:03 2:06 45-day plan to keep the government open
2:06 2:08 does this prevent a shutdown or just
2:08 2:10 delay at 45 days n listen I think it
2:10 2:12 gives us the time to continue down the
2:12 2:14 road of uh of getting through budget
2:14 2:16 bills for days the US House had been
2:16 2:17 gridlocked as house Speaker Kevin
2:17 2:20 McCarthy tried and failed to pass a bill
2:20 2:21 to fund the government with only
2:21 2:24 Republican votes today he agreed to a
2:24 2:26 deal both parties accepted at least
2:26 2:29 right now we have enough people on both
2:29 2:30 sides of the aisle to keep government
2:30 2:32 open the plan had no changes to current
2:32 2:34 spending but also eliminated money to
2:34 2:36 help the Ukraine war effort which some
2:36 2:39 Republicans had opposed paying for and
2:39 2:41 which Democrats said must be addressed
2:41 2:43 and readded come November we need to
2:43 2:46 address the security situation in
2:46 2:49 Ukraine to ensure that the Ukrainian
2:49 2:52 people can continue to fight the deal
2:52 2:54 includes billions of dollars in recovery
2:54 2:56 money for areas recently devastated by
2:56 2:58 natural disasters including flood
2:58 3:01 ravaged Vermont and hurricane victims in
3:01 3:03 Florida you think this bill will make it
3:03 3:04 through the Senate no trouble but
3:04 3:06 speaker McCarthy immediately took heat
3:06 3:08 from some conservative Republicans for
3:08 3:10 cutting a deal with Democrats this is a
3:10 3:12 worthless Congress doing business as
3:12 3:14 usual again Florida Republican Matt Gat
3:14 3:17 said McCarthy speakership is on Shaky
3:17 3:19 Ground just ahead of votes as Democrats
3:19 3:21 complained about a rushed process New
3:21 3:23 York Democrat Jamal Bowman was accused
3:23 3:25 of pulling a fire alarm in a house
3:25 3:27 office building which house leaders say
3:27 3:30 they'll investigate Bowman clined CBS
3:30 3:32 news's request for an interview and then
3:32 3:33 issued a statement saying he didn't
3:33 3:35 realize he would trigger a building
3:35 3:37 alarm as he was rushing to make an
3:37 3:38 urgent
3:38 3:40 vote at one point today the Senate was
3:40 3:42 poised to pass its own bill to keep the
3:42 3:45 government open 45 days but pivoted once
3:45 3:47 the house reached its deal and tried to
3:47 3:48 get it to the president's desk before
3:48 3:51 the paycheck stopped at midnight
3:51 3:54 Adriana Scott McFarland thank you
3:54 3:56 tonight parts of the Northeast are
3:56 3:58 drying out from Friday's record rains
3:58 4:00 Bronxville New York Police Department
4:00 4:03 share these images of submerged vehicles
4:03 4:04 around the village let's bring in
4:04 4:06 meteorologist Paul goodlow from our
4:06 4:09 partners at The Weather Channel well
4:09 4:10 Adriana we've been seeing because of our
4:10 4:13 warming climate an increase in big
4:13 4:14 rainfall events two and three inch
4:14 4:16 rainfall events Across the Nation have
4:16 4:18 been increasing over the last seven
4:18 4:20 years so it's not just New York City
4:20 4:22 we're seeing a lot of these events but
4:22 4:25 yeah yesterday wow what a day four five
4:25 4:28 6 9 in Rain events from this kind of
4:28 4:31 quasi associated with the tropics event
4:31 4:32 that brought this rain and it really
4:32 4:34 started Thursday night went through much
4:34 4:37 of the early part of Friday and gave us
4:37 4:39 that much rain before it slowly pushed
4:39 4:40 on out last night some scatter showers
4:40 4:42 today not a big deal the other big story
4:42 4:46 is the heat more low to mid 90s here you
4:46 4:47 got to remember tomorrow is October 1st
4:47 4:50 the heat is on we're talking more
4:50 4:52 potential records setting today tomorrow
4:52 4:55 and even into the first week of October

5:22 5:24 Workers president Shan feain visited
5:24 5:26 picketing workers today in Toledo after
5:26 5:29 17 days the UAW strike is showing no
5:29 5:32 signs of ending on Friday 7,000 of its
5:32 5:34 members joined picket lines as it
5:34 5:37 expanded its walk out union leaders
5:37 5:39 escalated the strikes because they say
5:39 5:41 Ford and GM have refused to make
5:41 5:42 meaningful progress at the bargaining
5:42 5:45 table the automakers blame the UAW for
5:45 5:48 the standoff accusing it of holding up
5:48 5:50 the deal while quote upping the rhetoric
5:50 5:51 and
5:51 5:54 theatrics as the Auto Workers strike
5:54 5:56 gain steam another potential walk out
5:56 5:58 could impact the nation's Health Care
5:58 6:00 System a Union representing healthcare
6:00 6:02 workers says it would be the largest
6:02 6:05 strike of its kind in history affecting
6:05 6:08 more than 12.5 million patients across
6:08 6:11 the country cbs's Tom we joins us now
6:11 6:13 from Los Angeles
6:13 6:15 Tom and good evening to you Adriana
6:15 6:17 Kaiser Permanente workers say they've
6:17 6:19 been trying to negotiate a deal since
6:19 6:21 April but have not been able to reach
6:21 6:24 one Kaiser management says they're doing
6:24 6:26 their part to support their
6:26 6:30 workers Kiser Kaiser UK tonight more
6:30 6:33 than 75,000 healthcare workers at Kaiser
6:33 6:35 Permanente one of the nation's largest
6:35 6:38 not for-profit Health Providers are set
6:38 6:40 to go on strike their contract expires
6:40 6:43 at midnight we will not be divided
6:43 6:45 patients in five states and Washington
6:45 6:48 DC would be affected people are
6:48 6:51 overworked people are not not able to
6:51 6:53 give the patients what they deserve the
6:53 6:56 union represents Hospital support staff
6:56 6:58 like nursing assistants EMTs and
6:58 7:00 pharmacists workers are asking for
7:00 7:02 raises and support but the biggest
7:02 7:04 concern is what the union calls a
7:04 7:07 staffing crisis in the wake of the co
7:07 7:09 pandemic we had nurses that got burned
7:09 7:11 out and just left and unfortunately we
7:11 7:13 lost a lot of really good healthcare
7:13 7:15 workers to death Kaiser says it's
7:15 7:17 accelerated hiring to help cover the
7:17 7:19 shortage and provided hundreds of
7:19 7:22 millions of dollars in support benefits
7:22 7:24 but they're prepared to cover patients
7:24 7:28 if a strike does happen this week un the
7:28 7:29 walk out would come on the heel of a
7:29 7:32 summer of strikes across the us nearly
7:32 7:35 300 this year alone hotel workers in
7:35 7:38 Vegas May walk out in the coming days
7:38 7:39 while Hollywood Screen Actors and
7:39 7:42 Southern California Hotel staff have
7:42 7:45 been on the picket line for
7:45 7:47 months Hollywood actors and Vegas
7:47 7:49 workers will go back to the negotiating
7:49 7:52 table next week the Kaiser Permanente
7:52 7:54 strike could start on Wednesday a longer
7:54 7:56 strike could take place in November
7:56 7:58 which could have an even bigger impact
7:58 8:01 Adriana Tom way thank you tonight police
8:01 8:03 in Philadelphia need help tracking down
8:03 8:06 a group of looters investigators
8:06 8:08 released new surveillance video showing
8:08 8:10 the moment the suspects used hammers to
8:10 8:12 smash their way into a PC Richard and
8:12 8:15 Sons Tuesday night going on a stealing

8:17 8:19 night putting businesses on edge all
8:19 8:22 week they are taking precautions hoping
8:22 8:24 not to get hit again Senator Diane
8:24 8:26 Feinstein is being remembered as a
8:26 8:29 trailblazing champion of her home state
8:29 8:32 of California at San Francisco City Hall
8:32 8:34 hundreds of MERS signed a condolence
8:34 8:36 book Friday for Feinstein who died at
8:36 8:38 the age of 90 after serving more than
8:38 8:41 three decades in the Senate funeral
8:41 8:42 plans have yet to be
8:42 8:45 announced the governor of New Mexico is
8:45 8:47 heading back to court to fight for her
8:47 8:49 temporary ban on guns in public places
8:49 8:51 in two counties the Department of Health
8:51 8:53 released data that shows the death rate
8:53 8:57 from Firearms surged by 87% there in the
8:57 8:58 last decade that's more than double the
8:58 9:01 n average cbs's Lana Zach is following
9:01 9:04 the story I don't feel that he's gotten
9:04 9:07 justice so far alicio ero says gun
9:07 9:10 violence is an epidemic in New Mexico
9:10 9:13 her son ilas was fatally shot in 2021
9:13 9:15 there's no handbook telling you what to
9:15 9:17 do when your kid is murdered but she and
9:17 9:18 her husband have been among the
9:18 9:20 protesters fighting Governor Michelle
9:20 9:22 Luan grisham's attempts to ban guns in
9:22 9:24 public in Albuquerque and Bernal Leo
9:24 9:27 County for 30 days their position driven
9:27 9:29 by the fear of more crimes no matter
9:29 9:31 what law you put out there to stop the
9:31 9:34 guns and take guns away the criminals
9:34 9:35 are always going to have guns the
9:35 9:38 governor cited a public health emergency
9:38 9:40 for the temporary measure after three
9:40 9:42 children were killed in recent shootings
9:42 9:44 including 11-year-old freyan Vias who
9:44 9:46 was gunned down outside a ballpark I
9:46 9:49 have to take a tough direct stand where
9:49 9:51 basically I'm just ignoring the fact
9:51 9:52 that we lost an
9:52 9:55 11-year-old another child a judge's
9:55 9:58 ruling temporarily halted the 30-day
9:58 10:00 suspension while the governor vows to
10:00 10:02 fight on the County's Democratic Sheriff
10:02 10:04 John Allen says the ban is
10:04 10:06 unconstitutional there's not enough law
10:06 10:08 enforcement to go around and enforce
10:08 10:10 this order when we're supposed to be
10:10 10:13 going after criminals on the street and
10:13 10:15 not after law-abiding citizens so what
10:15 10:16 are the solutions the solutions is
10:16 10:19 multifaceted you have red flag laws you
10:19 10:20 implement with your senators and your
10:20 10:22 representatives other laws that they
10:22 10:24 think might help bring down gun violence
10:24 10:26 but the Catholic Archbishop for the area
10:26 10:28 supports what the governor is trying to
10:28 10:31 do he councils families ravaged by gun
10:31 10:33 violence we have to be courageous we
10:33 10:35 have to do something about this terrible
10:35 10:37 status quo that we're living with in
10:37 10:40 terms of gun violence Lana Zach CBS news
10:40 10:42 Albuquerque straight ahead on the CBS
10:42 10:45 weekend news car hacking how thieves are
10:45 10:48 using cars high-tech computer systems to
10:48 10:51 steal them and busted how this photo got
10:51 10:58 a dog owner in
10:58 10:59 trouble
10:59 11:01 with car thefts at record highs the
11:01 11:03 computerized systems that make your car
11:03 11:05 so convenient also make it an easier
11:05 11:08 Target for thieves who are car hacking
11:08 11:11 instead of car jacking cbs's Usher Kari
11:11 11:13 shows us how it works and how you can
11:13 11:16 protect yourself these car thieves are
11:16 11:19 using sophisticated equipment to steal
11:19 11:23 the signal from a key fob inside the
11:23 11:26 house less than 30 seconds after
11:26 11:28 launching what's known as a relay attack
11:28 11:29 the criminals and that car in the
11:29 11:32 driveway are gone this is where it was
11:32 11:34 stolen from yep it was right out front
11:34 11:37 in Ivy Striker's case thieves used a
11:37 11:39 tablet to hack into his car by breaching
11:39 11:42 the onboard diagnostic system but if you
11:42 11:44 pay attention to the screen right there
11:44 11:47 you're going to see a key programmer
11:47 11:49 light up which is basically looks like a
11:49 11:51 tablet Steve labello is a car security
11:51 11:53 specialist just outside of Chicago we've
11:53 11:56 seen relay attacks and probably the most
11:56 11:58 common one that I do see is actual Key
11:58 11:59 Program
11:59 12:00 that you can just plug into the
12:00 12:02 vehicle's diagnostic port exploiting
12:02 12:04 some of these vulnerabilities how
12:04 12:06 quickly could you steal a car at about a
12:06 12:08 minute or less last summer Senator Ed
12:08 12:10 Mary of Massachusetts sent letters to 17
12:10 12:14 car makers urging them to quote take all
12:14 12:16 necessary steps to ensure that keyless
12:16 12:18 entry systems once a security innovation
12:18 12:20 that deterred thieves do not become a
12:20 12:23 security liability for them to exploit
12:23 12:25 the senator also asked them for data on
12:25 12:27 the number of their cars that are stolen
12:27 12:29 and how we reached out to of them as
12:29 12:32 well only five responded and none could
12:32 12:33 provide that information are
12:33 12:35 manufacturers doing enough to protect
12:35 12:38 cars from this type of theft I don't I
12:38 12:40 don't think so and I I think a lot of
12:40 12:42 them probably just aren't aware how easy
12:42 12:45 these cars are to be stolen in the first
12:45 12:47 place Steve labello offers his customers
12:47 12:49 this solution an aftermarket security
12:49 12:52 system that requires you to enter a
12:52 12:54 pre-programmed code using existing
12:54 12:56 Factory buttons in the vehicle to
12:56 12:58 authorize it to start so you're
12:58 12:59 preventing them from being able to
12:59 13:01 program new keys that's correct he
13:01 13:04 installed that system on Ivy's car hit
13:04 13:06 it right
13:06 13:09 code beeps
13:09 13:14 twice now you can turn it
13:14 13:17 on it's the reason the thieves couldn't
13:17 13:19 get it started as you can see they had
13:19 13:22 to push it away using their getaway car
13:22 13:26 17 Mi later they gave up and ditched it
13:26 13:27 so one way you can keep your key fob
13:27 13:29 safe right away when you're at home
13:29 13:31 store them away from the door in a metal
13:31 13:33 box or a special signal blocking pouch
13:33 13:35 another good option is an old-fashioned
13:35 13:37 anti- theft tool like a steering wheel
13:37 13:39 lock it can serve as a physical deter to
13:39 13:42 the new generation of car thieves who'd
13:42 13:44 rather hack into your car than use a
13:44 13:47 hacksaw Usher Ki CBS
