0:13 0:15 the floor the vote forced by Matt Gates
0:15 0:18 part of a small band of GOP hardliners
0:18 0:20 angry with McCarthy for cutting a deal
0:20 0:23 to avert a shutdown with a slim majority
0:23 0:25 McCarthy needed Democrats help to
0:25 0:28 survive but none coming to his rescue so

0:40 0:42 campground the clue that led police to
0:42 0:45 her the deadly pileup shutting down a
0:45 0:48 highway in Arkansas was it caused by a
0:48 0:51 massive fire burning nearby former
0:51 0:53 president Donald Trump back in court for
0:53 0:55 his fraud trial the major ruling why the
0:55 0:59 judge has imposed a gag order on him and
0:59 1:02 will he testify Hunter Biden pleading

1:04 1:06 his attorney is lashing out at Donald
1:06 1:08 Trump the congressman carjacked at
1:08 1:10 gunpoint in Washington the search
1:10 1:14 tonight for three suspects this is NBC
1:14 1:17 Nightly News with Lester Holt
1:17 1:19 good evening and welcome breaking
1:19 1:22 tonight Kevin McCarthy short and Rocky
1:22 1:23 Run as Speaker of the House of
1:23 1:26 Representatives has come to an end the
1:26 1:28 California Republican who until a few
1:28 1:30 hours ago was second in line to the
1:30 1:32 presidency was voted out of the
1:32 1:34 speakership this afternoon nine months
1:34 1:37 after he was elected to the job his
1:37 1:39 ouster came after key members of the
1:39 1:41 narrow Republican majority he presided
1:41 1:43 over turned on him in a dramatic
1:43 1:46 statement of no confidence the final
1:46 1:47 vote
1:47 1:50 216-210 with Democrats overwhelmingly
1:50 1:52 joining dissatisfied Republicans in
1:52 1:54 voting against him the call for
1:54 1:57 McCarthy's removal was instigated by
1:57 1:59 Congressman Matt Gates just days after
1:59 2:02 McCarthy made a deal with Democrats to
2:02 2:04 keep the government open without deep
2:04 2:06 spending cuts some Republicans wanted
2:06 2:08 Garrett hake has been watching it all
2:08 2:11 for us and has the latest
2:11 2:13 tonight after an historic vote in the
2:13 2:15 U.S house now former speaker Kevin
2:15 2:17 McCarthy returning to an office that is
2:17 2:20 no longer his I can continue to fight
2:20 2:22 maybe in a different manner
2:22 2:25 I will not run for speaker again the
2:25 2:28 office of Speaker of the House of the
2:28 2:29 United States House of Representatives
2:29 2:33 is hereby declared vacant acting On
2:33 2:36 Emotion by Florida Republican Matt Gates
2:36 2:38 eight Republicans joining with Democrats
2:38 2:40 in voting to vacate the position of
2:40 2:42 speaker for the first time ever
2:42 2:44 following an impassioned floor debating
2:44 2:46 it's disgusting it's what's disgusting
2:46 2:49 about Washington it's selfish bad for
2:49 2:51 conservative policies and bad for
2:51 2:52 America
2:52 2:55 that's why I strongly support speaker
2:55 2:57 Kevin McCarthy there's nothing selfish
2:57 2:59 about wanting a speaker of the house who
2:59 3:01 tells the truth North Carolina
3:01 3:03 Republican Patrick McHenry taking over
3:03 3:06 as temporary speaker the chair declares
3:06 3:07 the house from Recess subject to the
3:07 3:10 call of the chair
3:10 3:13 Gates declaring Victory it's the benefit
3:13 3:14 of this country that we have a better
3:14 3:16 Speaker of the House than Kevin McCarthy
3:16 3:18 Kevin McCarthy couldn't keep his word
3:18 3:20 while McCarthy's allies heaped scorn on
3:20 3:22 the Republican Rebels for dividing the
3:22 3:25 party Matt Gates wants to wreak havoc in
3:25 3:27 chaos within the Republican party and
3:27 3:30 he's doing just that and unfortunately
3:30 3:34 the American people are Pawns in his
3:34 3:37 narcissistic game of Charades the seed
3:37 3:38 for Gates challenge to McCarthy was
3:38 3:40 planted in January when the Florida
3:40 3:42 Firebrand was the last Republican
3:42 3:44 holdout to oppose making McCarthy
3:44 3:47 speaker eventually switching his vote to
3:47 3:49 present on the 15th ballot after
3:49 3:51 McCarthy worked with Democrats to
3:51 3:53 temporarily delay a government shutdown
3:53 3:55 this weekend Gates vowed to try to
3:55 3:58 remove him with McCarthy saying today I
3:58 4:00 think Matt has planned this all along it
4:00 4:01 didn't matter what we transpired
4:01 4:03 projecting confidence even as he arrived
4:03 4:05 for the vote look I'm an optimist
4:05 4:07 because I think there's no point of
4:07 4:09 being anything else The narrowly Divided
4:09 4:12 house left rats an opening would they
4:12 4:14 intervene to save a leader many despise
4:14 4:17 that just nobody trusts Kevin McCarthy
4:17 4:20 you trust Kevin McCarthy nobody trusts
4:20 4:22 Kevin McCarthy and why should we after a
4:22 4:24 two-hour meeting the Democratic leader
4:24 4:26 announcing dates stay out of the GOP
4:26 4:29 Civil War but vote against McCarthy
4:29 4:31 and Garrett joins me now Garrett what
4:31 4:32 happens now
4:32 4:34 so what happens next the house has to
4:34 4:36 select a new speaker and soon but
4:36 4:38 members have been told there are no more
4:38 4:40 votes this week meaning any new speaker
4:40 4:42 would come next week as House
4:42 4:44 Republicans try to plot a path forward
4:44 4:47 for their fractured party Lester Garrett
4:47 4:49 Hague thank you let me bring in Kristen
4:49 4:51 Welker now the moderator of Meet the
4:51 4:52 Press and Chris and you've been talking
4:52 4:54 with Republicans all day about the
4:54 4:57 impact of all this
4:57 4:58 Lester that's right and these
4:58 5:00 extraordinary events expose deep
5:00 5:03 divisions Republicans who were opposed
5:03 5:05 to removing McCarthy tell us it really
5:05 5:07 imperils their conservative agenda now
5:07 5:09 former president Trump post and quote
5:09 5:10 why is it that Republicans are always
5:10 5:12 fighting among themselves instead of
5:12 5:14 Democrats while former vice president
5:14 5:17 Pence called all of this chaos Lester
5:17 5:18 big picture our latest NBC News poll
5:18 5:20 shows the GOP with big advantages on
5:20 5:23 issues like the economy and there's real
5:23 5:25 concern among Republicans that events
5:25 5:26 like today could really hurt their
5:26 5:29 chances in 2024. Leicester Kristen
5:29 5:31 Welker thanks now to the remarkable
5:31 5:33 Rescue of a nine-year-old girl who
5:33 5:35 police say was abducted from her family

6:10 6:11 to get money according to the
6:11 6:16 arraignment memo a fingerprint was found
6:16 6:18 that matched what was found on the
6:18 6:19 ransom note authorities say that
6:19 6:23 critical clue was linked to a 1999 DWI
6:23 6:25 and allowed SWAT teams to move in on the
6:25 6:27 suspect's camper roughly 20 miles from
6:27 6:30 where Charlotte was last seen after some
6:30 6:32 resistance the suspect was taken into
6:32 6:34 custody
6:34 6:36 and immediately
6:36 6:38 the little girl was found
6:38 6:41 in a cabinet cupboard
6:41 6:43 she was rescued
6:43 6:45 and she knew she was being rescued
6:45 6:47 she knew that she was
6:47 6:50 in safe hands as a suspect known to the
6:50 6:51 family
6:51 6:53 it has not been determined that the
6:53 6:55 suspect was known to the family
6:55 6:57 the suspect was arraigned overnight on a
6:57 6:59 charge of first-degree kidnapping the
6:59 7:00 governor of New York saying they're

7:02 7:05 connections to other cases NBC News
7:05 7:07 attempted to contact the suspect's
7:07 7:13 attorney but we haven't heard back
7:13 7:15 in the neighborhood where officials say
7:15 7:17 Charlotte was found alive and unharmed
7:17 7:20 today Crews seem Gathering evidence and
7:20 7:22 residents grateful for some closure
7:22 7:25 after days on alert
7:25 7:27 Kathy could the suspect face more
7:27 7:30 charges
7:30 7:32 lesser that is certainly a possibility
7:32 7:33 the governor of New York saying that
7:33 7:34 this is still an active investigation
7:34 7:36 the suspect is currently being held at
7:36 7:38 the Saratoga county jail behind me

8:01 8:04 placed a gag order in the former
8:04 8:06 president today it followed a social

8:19 8:22 against him revealing he plans to take
8:22 8:24 the stand the appropriate time
8:24 8:26 well-being but it was his comments on
8:26 8:28 social media that prompted a dramatic
8:28 8:30 ruling from the judge after Mr Trump
8:30 8:33 posted a photo of the judge's law clerk
8:33 8:35 posing with top Senate Democrat Chuck
8:35 8:38 Schumer the judge ordering the post on

10:05 10:07 being an active drug user and lying
10:07 10:09 about it on a Federal Form his attorney
10:09 10:11 calling the charges the result of
10:11 10:13 political pressure from president Trump
10:13 10:16 and his Mega allies to force the justice
10:16 10:18 department to ignore the law and deviate
10:18 10:20 from its policies in cases like this one
10:20 10:23 special counsel David Weiss filing the

10:38 10:41 Weiss denies if convicted Hunter Biden
10:41 10:43 facing a sentence of as much as 25 years
10:43 10:46 behind bars although he's unlikely to
10:46 10:48 serve that much time and his looming
10:48 10:50 legal problems come as House Republicans
10:50 10:52 step up their impeachment inquiry hoping
10:52 10:54 to tie Hunter Biden's foreign business
10:54 10:57 dealings to his father whether it was
10:57 11:00 lunches phone calls White House meetings

11:06 11:10 Biden the family brand a key GOP witness
11:10 11:12 last week testifying there's not enough
11:12 11:14 evidence for impeachment so far the
11:14 11:16 president has said he was not involved
11:16 11:19 in his son's work and Hunter Biden still
11:19 11:21 faces tax charges that could be handed
11:21 11:22 down by the end of the month in both
11:22 11:25 California and Washington D.C lesser
11:25 11:28 Ryan Nobles tonight thank you in 60
11:28 11:29 seconds the big headline today on
11:29 11:31 attempts to lower the price of some of
11:31 11:34 the most popular prescriptions at a
11:34 11:36 well-known congressman jacked at
11:36 11:39 gunpoint as Washington faces a surge in
11:39 11:42 violent crime
11:42 11:45 we're back with a major step towards
11:45 11:47 slashing prescription prices the Biden
11:47 11:49 Administration announcing today that
11:49 11:51 manufacturers have all agreed to new
11:51 11:54 price negotiations with Medicare under a
11:54 11:57 law passed last year the first 10 drugs
11:57 11:59 selected include widely used blood
11:59 12:01 thinners diabetes and rheumatoid
12:01 12:04 arthritis medications the new prices
12:04 12:08 would not take effect until 2026 and
12:08 12:09 authorities in Washington are searching
12:09 12:12 for three armed suspects who carjacked a
12:12 12:15 member of Congress last night as the
12:15 12:17 nation's capital faces a surge in
12:17 12:19 violent crime plaguing some other
12:19 12:22 American cities here's Tom Costello
12:22 12:24 happened at less than a mile from the
12:24 12:26 capitol Texas Democrat Henry Cuellar
12:26 12:29 carjacked as he arrived at his DC
12:29 12:31 apartment I looked to the left somebody
12:31 12:33 had a gun to the white so I had a gun I
12:33 12:36 had a third guy behind me uh and uh you
12:36 12:38 got to stay calm police recovered
12:38 12:40 cuellar's car they're still looking for
12:40 12:42 three massed suspects thought to be
12:42 12:45 teenagers it's been a year of violence
12:45 12:47 in the nation's capital
12:47 12:50 753 carjackings double last year's
12:50 12:53 number overall violent crime up 39
12:53 12:56 percent 216 homicides more than all of
12:56 12:58 last year and on track to be the
12:58 13:02 deadliest in 20 years
13:02 13:06 foreign
13:06 13:08 I've been living here 31 years this is
13:08 13:11 the worst I've ever seen around here
13:11 13:14 while violent crime is flat or down in
13:14 13:17 New York Los Angeles and Philly it's up
13:17 13:20 eight percent in Atlanta up 27 in
13:20 13:23 Chicago up 28 in Baltimore
13:23 13:25 Washington's acting police chief says
13:25 13:27 her department is understaffed and
13:27 13:29 stretched Beyond capacity the most
13:29 13:31 pressing concern that I've heard from
13:31 13:33 community members is the increase in
13:33 13:35 robberies and carjackings and the fear
13:35 13:37 that this creates representative Cuellar
13:37 13:39 isn't the first member of Congress to be
13:39 13:41 a DC crime victim Minnesota
13:41 13:44 representative Angie Craig was assaulted
13:44 13:46 at her DC apartment a staff member for
13:46 13:49 Senator Rand Paul survived a stabbing
13:49 13:52 last March Congress and President Biden
13:52 13:54 this year blocked a D.C council plan
13:54 13:56 that would have increased penalties for
13:56 13:58 some crimes but lower them for others
13:58 14:01 including carjackings Buster Tom thank
14:01 14:04 you coming up the political Minefield in
14:04 14:07 Texas school yards politics religion and
14:07 14:12 the students caught in the middle next
14:12 14:14 we're back now with our new NBC News
14:14 14:17 Studios podcast it's called Grapevine
14:17 14:19 and it examines the growing influence of
14:19 14:21 politics and religion on schools
14:21 14:23 throughout the lens of a North Texas
14:23 14:26 town tonight one of the co-hosts Antonia
14:26 14:28 Hilton has a preview of her highly
14:28 14:30 anticipated series
14:30 14:33 it's Anisha menezes senior year but she
14:33 14:35 spent less time celebrating making Honor
14:35 14:37 Society or getting excited about college
14:37 14:40 I think we all just feel exhausted
14:40 14:42 instead she's often worried about
14:42 14:45 politics in her North Texas school
14:45 14:47 district of Grapevine Colleyville and my
14:47 14:51 school all I can see is people pitted
14:51 14:53 against each other over the course of
14:53 14:55 the last two years School Board
14:55 14:56 candidates backed by Conservative
14:56 14:58 Christian activists in three local
14:58 15:00 districts Grapevine Colleyville South
15:00 15:03 Lake and Keller have passed sweeping
15:03 15:05 policies restricting lessons on Race
15:05 15:08 gender and sexuality the bathroom use of
15:08 15:10 trans students and removing hundreds of
15:10 15:13 books parents weighing in teachers
15:13 15:15 shouldn't be forced to use your freaking
15:15 15:18 made up fantasy pronouns we're clouding
15:18 15:20 their mind with these these ideas of
15:20 15:23 gender confusion but students at all
15:23 15:24 three districts told us they now worry
15:24 15:26 the church is creeping into the state
15:26 15:29 and their schools how have you seen
15:29 15:32 religion in influence your schools it's
15:32 15:35 frustrating strange and hypocritical
15:35 15:38 to see the In God We Trust signs being
15:38 15:40 put up everywhere while at the same time
15:40 15:43 books are being removed from our library
15:43 15:45 shelves on the first day of the Texas
15:45 15:47 legislative session Pastor in north
15:47 15:50 Texas representative Nate schatzein led
15:50 15:52 a prayer in the Texas Capitol there's
15:52 15:53 nothing more important than we could be
15:53 15:56 doing than this right here worshiping
15:56 15:59 and praying in the middle of the capital
15:59 16:01 during the session he voted to restrict
16:01 16:04 drag performances and to hire religious
16:04 16:06 chaplains as unlicensed mental health
16:06 16:09 counselors in public schools he canceled
16:09 16:11 an on-camera interview but agreed to
16:11 16:12 speak to NBC news for the new podcast
16:12 16:15 Grapevine what we hear from lgbtq
16:15 16:18 children right now is that this slate of
16:18 16:21 bills has made them feel less safe in
16:21 16:23 their Community how do you square that
16:23 16:26 reality with your Christian faith
16:26 16:28 I think Christianity is always rooted in
16:28 16:30 truth and our emotions are always going
16:30 16:32 to tell us things you know what we have
16:32 16:34 never done is encourage hatreds towards
16:34 16:37 that Community do you believe in the
16:37 16:39 fundamental separation of church and
16:39 16:41 state I believe that church in the
16:41 16:43 Constitution what was written about it
16:43 16:45 was written to keep the state out of the
16:45 16:48 church not to keep the church out of the
16:48 16:51 state that sentiment drove award-winning
16:51 16:54 history teacher Amanda Guthrie away from
16:54 16:56 public education for good
16:56 16:58 you made the decision to leave in the
16:58 17:00 middle of the school year I did why not
17:00 17:02 stick it out a few more months
17:02 17:04 it felt
17:04 17:05 unsafe
17:05 17:07 the people that work in that District
17:07 17:10 are hard-working caring people but
17:10 17:11 um
17:11 17:13 even they have no control over what the
17:13 17:16 school board does or says leaders from
17:16 17:17 all three districts declined to be
17:17 17:19 interviewed Grapevine Colleyville told
17:19 17:22 NBC news we review all feedback and
17:22 17:23 continuously look at how we can better
17:23 17:26 serve and support our employees South
17:26 17:28 Lakes Carroll School noted as required
17:28 17:30 by Texas law we have policies and
17:30 17:33 processes that respect parental rights
17:33 17:35 and appropriately review curriculum and
17:35 17:37 Keller ISD saying we believe that mutual
17:37 17:41 respect and dignity build unity in a
17:41 17:46 time where the climate is so
17:46 17:49 hostile it's nice to be able to find
17:49 17:53 solace in just friends you can talk to
17:53 17:56 they are proud that these battles have
17:56 17:58 taught them how to find their voice
