1:31 1:34 complained the new iPhone 15 is at times
1:34 1:37 too hot to

1:42 1:51 straight gold at the World

1:52 1:54 viewers in the west and thank you for
1:54 1:56 joining us on this Wednesday night we
1:56 1:57 begin tonight with the political and
1:57 1:59 real world Fallout from the historic
1:59 2:02 removal of the Speaker of the House the
2:02 2:04 unprecedented vote to vacate the chair
2:04 2:06 leaves the House of Representatives in a
2:06 2:09 state of chaos and at a standstill
2:09 2:11 interim speaker Patrick McKenry of North
2:11 2:14 Carolina upset at the farri faction of
2:14 2:17 his own party sent lawmakers home to
2:17 2:19 cool off with only about six weeks to
2:19 2:21 prevent a government shutdown members
2:21 2:23 will return to the capital on Tuesday
2:23 2:25 with an expected vote for the next
2:25 2:27 speaker taking place the following day
2:27 2:29 two conservative hardliners have already
2:29 2:31 thrown their hat into the ring Majority
2:31 2:34 Leader Steve scalise and Ohio
2:34 2:36 Congressman Jim Jordan until then the
2:36 2:39 people's house is closed for business we
2:39 2:40 have a lot of news to bring you tonight
2:40 2:42 and CBS is Scott McFarland we'll start
2:42 2:44 us off tonight from Capitol Hill good
2:44 2:46 evening Scott good evening Nora for a
2:46 2:49 second day half of the US Congress is
2:49 2:50 paralyzed and will remain so
2:50 2:53 indefinitely raising fears Congress is
2:53 2:55 barreling again toward a painful
2:55 2:57 government
2:57 3:00 shutdown Kevin McCarthy's name still
3:00 3:02 hangs above the doorway but the fight to
3:02 3:05 replace him is on top Republicans Steve
3:05 3:07 scales and Jim Jordan both officially
3:07 3:09 announced their candidacies today I
3:09 3:11 think I can but whether they have the
3:11 3:14 votes to succeed and when the house will
3:14 3:16 eventually reopen for business are both
3:16 3:18 open questions is there anything you can
3:18 3:20 tell us about the schedule or what
3:20 3:22 happens next the interim speaker North
3:22 3:24 Carolina's Patrick McKenry had no
3:24 3:26 answers on the days ahead the only
3:26 3:29 certainty among most Republicans today
3:29 3:31 they dis for colleague Matt Gates who
3:31 3:33 led the charge to remove McCarthy I
3:33 3:36 think it was deplorable uh I think it
3:36 3:39 was disgraceful and he put his own Petty
3:39 3:41 personal grievances ahead of the country
3:41 3:43 Gates today continued to attack his
3:43 3:46 colleagues the nerve of these
3:46 3:48 establishment Republicans to have to
3:48 3:50 take a week to go have a good cry and
3:50 3:52 then blame us for being the reason that
3:52 3:54 we can't get the work done the
3:54 3:56 leadership vacuum and overall paralysis
3:56 3:58 in the house is Raising new worries
3:58 4:00 about crashing into the new November
4:00 4:02 17th deadline to fund the government and
4:02 4:04 avert a government shutdown the lights
4:04 4:06 are off the doors are locked
4:06 4:08 indefinitely what should folks make of
4:08 4:10 that yeah they should be very concerned
4:10 4:11 I mean the average American should be
4:11 4:13 very concerned we need to change the
4:13 4:16 poisonous atmosphere in Washington also
4:16 4:18 in danger funding for Ukraine which was
4:18 4:21 left out of last weekend's deal to avert
4:21 4:23 a shut down the Pentagon warning
4:23 4:24 Congress this week that it's running out
4:24 4:27 of money to replace weapons it sent to
4:27 4:29 Ukraine any new speaker will have to
4:29 4:31 contend with a growing number of House
4:31 4:32 Republicans who think it's time to turn
4:32 4:35 off the spigot you think what happened
4:35 4:37 yesterday sends a pretty troubling
4:37 4:39 message to Ukraine it sends a troubling
4:39 4:42 message around the world there's another
4:42 4:43 controversy former house Speaker Nancy
4:43 4:45 Pelosi and Democratic leader stenny
4:45 4:47 Hoyer say they were evicted from their
4:47 4:49 Capital Hideaway offices a perk for
4:49 4:52 senior members one of Kevin McCarthy's
4:52 4:54 allies says Republicans control the
4:54 4:57 office space and that McCarthy now needs
4:57 4:58 and is entitled to the space that's been
4:58 5:01 used by Pelosi Nora all right Scott
5:01 5:03 McFarland thank you tonight the largest
5:03 5:05 healthc care strike in American history
5:05 5:07 is underway after tens of thousands of
5:07 5:09 Kaiser Permanente workers walked off the
5:09 5:12 job in five states and right here in DC
5:12 5:14 the union is asking for higher pay and
5:14 5:17 Better Staffing cbs's Jolene Kent talked
5:17 5:21 to striking workers on the picket
5:21 5:23 line at dawn this morning more than
5:23 5:26 75,000 workers at Kaiser Permanente
5:26 5:28 walked out we're taking care of lives
5:28 5:31 you know help workers should be valued
5:31 5:32 joining her on the picket lines
5:32 5:34 pharmacists respiratory therapists
5:34 5:37 optometrists and other technicians the
5:37 5:39 union is asking for better working
5:39 5:42 conditions and a $25 an hour minimum
5:42 5:45 wage Kaiser has offered 21 to $23 an
5:45 5:48 hour that's just above what fast food
5:48 5:50 workers will soon make in California we
5:50 5:52 have a lot of people who leave and
5:52 5:53 they're like you know why would I work
5:53 5:55 here for the same pay that I can make at
5:55 5:58 Burger King or Target and not have to
5:58 6:00 come in contact with infection diseas
6:00 6:02 Kaiser has a patient pool of nearly 13
6:02 6:04 million people and more than 300,000
6:04 6:07 employees its profit so far this year
6:07 6:10 tops $3 billion fighting for our
6:10 6:13 patients in a message to patients Kaiser
6:13 6:15 said our hospitals emergency departments
6:15 6:17 and pharmacies will remain open we may
6:17 6:19 need to reschedule certain non-urgent
6:19 6:21 appointments and procedures the 3-day
6:21 6:24 walkout began as negotiations intensify
6:24 6:27 for unions striking in other Industries
6:27 6:29 today Auto Workers culinary workers and
6:29 6:31 Screen Actors are all at the bargaining
6:31 6:34 table the economic impact has been
6:34 6:36 profound strikes around the country so
6:36 6:38 far this year have meant a loss of
6:38 6:41 nearly 7 and a half million work days
6:41 6:44 the most in a generation what would you
6:44 6:46 say to a Kaiser executive if you could
6:46 6:49 talk face to face right now Heiser do
6:49 6:53 better for your patients and for your
6:53 6:55 employees the nurse that we just heard
6:55 6:57 from there also tells me she thinks
6:57 7:00 about quitting the job that she loves
7:00 7:02 every single day due to the current
7:02 7:05 conditions now K Kaiser acknowledges
7:05 7:07 that 5 million healthcare workers across
7:07 7:08 the industry have quit since the
7:08 7:11 beginning of the pandemic and burnout is
7:11 7:14 at a record high Nora Jolan Kent there
7:14 7:16 on the picket lines thank you well
7:16 7:18 there's breaking news tonight after a
7:18 7:20 mass shooting at a historically black
7:20 7:22 University including and rather injuring
7:22 7:24 five people Morgan State University in
7:24 7:26 Baltimore is canceling its homecoming
7:26 7:27 weekend for the first time in the
7:27 7:30 school's history and it comes as cbs's
7:30 7:32 Nicole skanga reports a suspect or
7:32 7:34 suspects remain at
7:34 7:36 large anybody
7:36 7:39 Sho a campus wide lockdown everybody
7:39 7:42 good yeah I need a medic n for 3 hours
7:42 7:44 students sheltered in place as SWAT
7:44 7:47 teams with guns drawn searched dorm
7:47 7:49 rooms and swept hallways looking for
7:49 7:51 suspects I got a shot out window it
7:51 7:54 appears after a flurry of gunfire
7:54 7:56 shattered windows and sent Baltimore
7:56 7:58 Police racing to the scene Tuesday night
7:58 8:00 when it happened and it was just a
8:00 8:04 frenzy and students ducking for
8:04 8:06 cover the bullets hit the glass behind
8:06 8:09 my head five people including four
8:09 8:12 students were hit but all are expected
8:12 8:14 to make full recoveries authorities
8:14 8:16 found multiple guns at the scene but
8:16 8:19 haven't made any arrests we believe the
8:19 8:21 five victims who were struck were
8:21 8:22 unintended
8:22 8:26 targets the nation's 531st mass shooting
8:26 8:28 this year came during the University's
8:28 8:31 home coming week today classes are
8:31 8:33 cancelled and Baltimore officials say
8:33 8:35 enough is enough gun violence has been
8:35 8:38 an epidemic in this country longer than
8:38 8:40 I've been breathing oxygen and we've had
8:40 8:42 little to no action at Morgan State
8:42 8:45 University they've had three backtack
8:45 8:47 homecomings mired by gun violence is
8:47 8:50 that acceptable that's not acceptable
8:50 8:53 anywhere investigators say the incident
8:53 8:55 likely stemmed from a dispute between
8:55 8:58 two small groups and an update on the
8:58 9:01 victims tonight three of the injured
9:01 9:02 have already been released from the
9:02 9:05 hospital Nora Nicole skanga thank you
9:05 9:07 very much there's more breaking news
9:07 9:09 with another shooting this time in
9:09 9:11 Massachusetts police say several people
9:11 9:13 were shot today in Holy Oak including a
9:13 9:15 pregnant woman who was riding by on a
9:15 9:18 bus the mother is in critical condition
9:18 9:20 but her baby died investigators say the
9:20 9:22 shooting took place after there was a
9:22 9:24 fight on the street three suspects are
9:24 9:27 in custody at nearby hospitals now to
9:27 9:29 the murder investigation of for Tupac
9:29 9:32 Shakur nearly 30 years after the music
9:32 9:34 icon's death the man police and
9:34 9:38 prosecutors say was behind the 1996 Las
9:38 9:39 Vegas shooting made his first court
9:39 9:42 appearance today on murder charges cbs's
9:42 9:44 Alise Preston reports tonight from
9:44 9:46 outside the
9:46 9:49 courthouse after Tupac Shakur's murder
9:49 9:52 27 years ago today the focus was on this
9:52 9:55 Los Vegas courtroom as a handcuffed
9:55 9:59 Dwayne Kefi D Davis limped in a
9:59 10:01 appearing before a judge and the world
10:01 10:03 for the first time since the
10:03 10:05 self-proclaimed gang member and drug
10:05 10:08 kingpin was charged with Tupac's murder
10:08 10:11 this is such a high-profile case 27
10:11 10:13 years in the making we feel very
10:13 10:15 confident that the criminal justice
10:15 10:18 system will work in this case police
10:18 10:20 just arrested 60-year-old Davis last
10:20 10:22 week Davis has admitted to being in the
10:22 10:25 car at the time of the driveby shooting
10:25 10:28 Penning a 2019 Memoir and conducting
10:28 10:29 several interviews
10:29 10:33 including with Vlad lubov for Vlad TV
10:33 10:34 they want to come put me in jail for
10:34 10:36 life I just something I got to do and
10:36 10:39 like I'm scared of jail or do you think
10:39 10:40 after all this
10:40 10:44 time that it weighed on him I I don't
10:44 10:45 think it really weighed on him I think
10:45 10:48 it's just been so long and you know you
10:48 10:51 can normalize anything you can normalize
10:51 10:54 murder now there was no plea enter Davis
10:54 10:57 appeared in in court by himself his
10:57 10:59 attorney couldn't make it the next here
10:59 11:02 ing is set for 2 weeks Nora Elise
11:02 11:04 Preston thank you very much let's turn
11:04 11:05 out of the weather because more than 6
11:05 11:07 million Americans are under severe
11:07 11:09 thunderstorm watches tonight in East
11:09 11:11 Texas and Oklahoma storms could produce
11:11 11:14 baseballs siiz hail damaging winds and
11:14 11:17 the possibility of floods flooding is
11:17 11:19 also a concern in New England this
11:19 11:21 weekend tropical storm phelipe could
11:21 11:23 make a landfall in Maine on Sunday and
11:23 11:24 it will bring at least three inches of
11:24 11:27 rain from New York to Maine that's
11:27 11:29 starting on Saturday turning overseas
11:29 11:31 now to the Vatican where Pope Francis
11:31 11:33 opened an important meeting of Catholic
11:33 11:35 Bishops today on the future of the
11:35 11:37 church among the controversial topics
11:37 11:39 whether priests can marry or women can
11:39 11:42 become deacons and if priests can bless
11:42 11:45 same-sex marriages cbs's Chris Liv say
11:45 11:48 is in Rome from around the world Bishops
11:48 11:51 Gathering and sometimes clashing on hot
11:51 11:53 button issues but the biggest bombshell
11:53 11:55 dropped before the Senate even began
11:55 11:57 with Francis this week publishing a
11:57 11:59 letter opening the door for priest to
11:59 12:02 bless samex unions we cannot be judges
12:02 12:04 who only deny reject and exclude
12:04 12:08 declared the pontiff as queer people we
12:08 12:10 want to believe that God blesses our
12:10 12:13 love Jamie Manson a women's rights
12:13 12:15 activist and devout Catholic says the
12:15 12:17 change opens the church tent for lgbtq
12:17 12:20 couples like her and her partner of four
12:20 12:23 years affirming and embracing everyone
12:23 12:25 only makes the church stronger it is a
12:25 12:28 very slim minority of Catholics who are
12:28 12:31 opposed to same-sex Unions that's what
12:31 12:33 they wish but it's not father Gerald
12:33 12:35 Murray is a conservative priest from
12:35 12:37 Manhattan for the pope to say that
12:37 12:39 priests and Bishops can find a way to do
12:39 12:41 this it's wrong he shouldn't do it
12:41 12:43 what's the harm in making this a this
12:43 12:46 tense so to speak bigger for more people
12:46 12:48 the harm is that it contradicts Catholic
12:48 12:50 teaching American conservative leaders
12:50 12:51 in the Catholic church have warned that
12:51 12:54 if Francis doesn't SCT to Doctrine he
12:54 12:57 could provoke a permanent split in his
12:57 12:59 homy to open the meeting Francis made it
12:59 13:03 clear where his Focus
13:03 13:08 lies he said everyone everyone everyone
13:08 13:11 must be allowed in this summer Pope
13:11 13:13 Francis called some of his conservative
13:13 13:15 critics in the US backwards as for
13:15 13:18 blessing same-sex unions Pope Francis
13:18 13:19 says this shouldn't give the impression
13:19 13:21 that they're on par with heterosexual
13:21 13:24 marriages still the only marriages the
13:24 13:26 Catholic Church recognizes Nora quite a
13:26 13:29 story Chris livay thank you very much
13:29 13:32 well now to a horrific story out of Iran
13:32 13:33 a Human Rights group is accusing Iran's
13:33 13:36 so-called morality police of beating a
13:36 13:39 teenage girl for not wearing a headscarf
13:39 13:41 surveillance video appears to show a
13:41 13:43 16-year-old girl being pulled
13:43 13:46 unconscious From a Train activists later
13:46 13:48 posted a photo on social media claiming
13:48 13:51 the girl had been beaten into a coma CBS
13:51 13:53 News has not been able to verify the
13:53 13:55 video or the photo the state department
13:55 13:58 says the US is alarmed by these reports
13:58 14:01 and condemns Iran's treatment of its
14:01 14:02 women and
14:02 14:05 girls tonight Ford has announced more
14:05 14:08 layoffs due to the ongoing UAW strike
14:08 14:10 400 workers were told not to report to
14:10 14:12 work tomorrow at two Michigan plants one
14:12 14:14 of the main sticking points of the
14:14 14:16 strike is the transition to electric
14:16 14:19 vehicles which have surged in production
14:19 14:22 cbs's Ben Tracy goes in depth for a rare
14:22 14:24 look inside the manufacturing boom
14:24 14:26 taking place across the country to build
14:26 14:29 new EV batteries
14:29 14:31 so right now this plant just opened
14:31 14:34 around 6 months ago by year end this
14:34 14:36 plant will be at capacity and we're
14:36 14:38 going to need another PL Michael cronley
14:38 14:41 is CEO of Ascend elements it recycles
14:41 14:44 used EV batteries in Covington Georgia
14:44 14:47 extracting 98% of critical metals that
14:47 14:50 can then be reused a key part of the new
14:50 14:52 EV supply chain I'm really proud to be
14:52 14:54 part of that and I know a lot of our
14:54 14:56 team members are also very very proud to
14:56 14:58 be part of that in the past three years
14:58 15:00 more than than 90 billion in battery
15:00 15:01 Investments have been announced
15:01 15:04 Nationwide creating an estimated 70,000
15:04 15:07 manufacturing jobs much of it in a
15:07 15:09 stretch from Michigan Down to Georgia
15:09 15:12 now being called the battery belt so
15:12 15:14 this is a battery cell yes this is a PCH
15:14 15:18 cell Jay Wan is Executive Vice chairman
15:18 15:21 of battery maker skon part of a South
15:21 15:23 Korean conglomerate after Decades of us
15:23 15:26 jobs being offshored foreign companies
15:26 15:28 are opening dozens of new battery plants
15:28 15:31 in the US SK plans to employ up to
15:31 15:34 15,000 people in Five plants by
15:34 15:37 2026 including this one in North Georgia
15:37 15:40 the size of 13 football fields it can
15:40 15:42 produce enough batteries every year to
15:42 15:45 power 400,000 Vehicles we're very happy
15:45 15:49 that we chose Georgia Kentucky and
15:49 15:51 Tennessee or why did you say this is
