1:15 1:18 Chicago we hear from passengers on
1:18 1:22 board this is NBC Nightly News with Jose
1:22 1:24 Diaz
1:24 1:26 Bard good evening we begin tonight with
1:26 1:29 one of America's closest allies attacked
1:29 1:32 and now at War the scenes this morning
1:32 1:35 across Israel were chaotic unprecedented
1:35 1:37 and terrifying the Palestinian militant
1:37 1:40 group Kamas choosing a Jewish holiday to
1:40 1:43 launch an attack on and into Israel
1:43 1:45 there was the barrage of rockets into
1:45 1:48 Israel but also incursions by militants
1:48 1:50 these were the scenes of Kamas Fighters
1:50 1:52 storming across the border marauding
1:52 1:55 through the streets of Israel Hamas
1:55 1:57 confirming it has taken an unconfirmed
1:57 2:00 number of hostages soldiers and and
2:00 2:02 civilians dragged from the streets an
2:02 2:05 Israeli official calling today they are
2:05 2:08 911 Israel's response so far has been
2:08 2:11 Swift but only just beginning they've
2:11 2:14 already leveled entire buildings in Gaza
2:14 2:17 the territory there's home to Hamas the
2:17 2:19 death toll is at least 200 people on
2:19 2:22 each side and is expected to rise our
2:22 2:24 teams are across the region and here in
2:24 2:27 the US we begin with rfh Sanchez on the
2:27 2:28 ground in
2:28 2:31 Israel
2:31 2:33 it looks like a scene from Israel's
2:33 2:36 darkest nightmare a surprise attack
2:36 2:38 beginning with thousands of rockets
2:38 2:40 followed by waves of heavily armed
2:40 2:43 Palestinian gunmen pouring out of
2:43 2:46 Gaza and onto the streets of cities and
2:46 2:48 towns across Southern Israel the
2:48 2:51 militants taking whole fam's hostage
2:51 2:53 marching them Barefoot through their own
2:53 2:56 neighborhoods and
2:56 2:59 then cries of Triumph as they Spirit
2:59 3:02 their cap Ives back to Gaza this woman
3:02 3:04 bloodied zip tied and terrified
3:04 3:06 struggling as she's forced into the back
3:06 3:09 of a captured Israeli military Jeep and
3:09 3:11 here the body of an Israeli soldier
3:11 3:13 dragged from the turret of a tank and
3:13 3:15 beaten by the
3:15 3:18 mob Israel's military tonight confirming
3:18 3:20 there are both civilians and soldiers
3:20 3:24 among the captives their exact number is
3:24 3:27 unknown but the Army says all options
3:27 3:30 are on the table including a full scale
3:30 3:33 ground invasion of Gaza to bring them
3:33 3:36 home Israel's prime minister telling his
3:36 3:39 people citizens of Israel we are at War
3:39 3:42 not in an operation but at War and every
3:42 3:45 hour the death toll Rising these
3:45 3:47 civilians killed at a bus stop and in
3:47 3:50 this kabut victims packed into a small
3:50 3:53 room and executed at Point Blank Range
3:53 3:55 the surprise attack led by highly
3:55 3:58 trained fighters from Hamas and Islamic
3:58 4:01 Jihad
4:01 4:03 blasting their way through the security
4:03 4:06 barrier separating Israel from Gaza in
4:06 4:10 some places using bulldozers to smash
4:10 4:13 through this unit fighting into the
4:13 4:15 era's border crossing the main terminal
4:15 4:18 between Israel and Gaza usually tightly
4:18 4:19 controlled by Israeli troops The
4:19 4:22 Crossing today completely overrun by
4:22 4:25 Palestinian Fighters Israel's military
4:25 4:27 caught badly off guard surging its
4:27 4:30 forces into the South fighting Street by
4:30 4:32 street across more than 20 locations as
4:32 4:35 it tries to regain control this is
4:35 4:37 usually one of the busiest highways in
4:37 4:39 southern Israel and on a holiday weekend
4:39 4:41 you would expect it to be full of cars
4:41 4:43 instead you can see Israeli security
4:43 4:46 forces have set up a checkpoint here
4:46 4:48 they are searching Vehicles as they come
4:48 4:49 by because they do not know where the
4:49 4:53 gunmen are the Rockets more than 3,000
4:53 4:55 in total coming in wave after Relentless
4:55 4:57 wave throughout
4:57 5:00 Shabbat I was sleeping she said says my
5:00 5:02 grandson woke me up telling me wake up
5:02 5:04 wake up then I heard a boom everyone
5:04 5:07 started
5:07 5:10 crying Israeli Jets pounding targets
5:10 5:13 across Gaza this Tower collapsing after
5:13 5:16 a direct strike and Palestinian
5:16 5:18 hospitals flooded with the dead and
5:18 5:20 wounded many of them
5:20 5:23 civilians a war only in its opening
5:23 5:25 hours and a nightmare the people of the
5:25 5:29 Holy lands can't seem to wake up from
5:29 5:31 and rfh joins us now from Israel Raph
5:31 5:35 there are fears of death toll will rise
5:35 5:37 tonight that's right Jose Israel's
5:37 5:39 foreign Ministry says at least 200
5:39 5:42 people were killed in this attack and
5:42 5:44 inside Gaza Palestinian officials say
5:44 5:47 more than 230 have died in Israeli air
5:47 5:50 strike so far those numbers expected to
5:50 5:52 rise as this war continues
5:52 5:56 Jose RAF Sanchez in Israel thank you
5:56 5:58 prime minister Netanyahu vowed to avenge
5:58 6:00 the attack by Hamas saying quote the
6:00 6:02 enemy will pay a price like they have
6:02 6:05 never known before Chief foreign
6:05 6:06 correspondent Richard Engel joins us now
6:06 6:10 Richard what likely happens
6:10 6:12 next well I think we're going to see an
6:12 6:14 Israeli military response the only
6:14 6:17 question is how big it will be and
6:17 6:18 Israel in the past has not been shy
6:18 6:20 about using its military super
6:20 6:23 superiority to hit Hamas Targets in Gaza
6:23 6:26 when hamas's fired Rockets but the real
6:26 6:29 limiting factor here is these hostages
6:29 6:32 because if Israel launches a broad
6:32 6:34 invasion of Gaza right now it could
6:34 6:36 inadvertently kill some of its own
6:36 6:39 citizens uh Gaza is densely populated
6:39 6:42 there are many tunnels uh it is a place
6:42 6:44 that Hamas knows better than Israel and
6:44 6:46 it is very likely that Hamas will put
6:46 6:49 some of these hostages in key locations
6:49 6:52 and use them as human Shields so I think
6:52 6:53 what we're going to see first is a
6:53 6:56 period of intelligence gathering before
6:56 6:59 any major Israeli uh operations the
6:59 7:01 other limiting factor public opinion
7:01 7:03 particularly in the Arab world if
7:03 7:05 Israel's scene is carrying out some
7:05 7:07 blanket response against the
7:07 7:10 Palestinians in Gaza and uh incurring a
7:10 7:12 huge death toll it could trigger a
7:12 7:15 regional War Jose Richard angle thank
7:15 7:18 you Israel has some of the most advanced
7:18 7:20 intelligence agencies in the world but
7:20 7:22 somehow they were caught totally off
7:22 7:25 guard and so was the US Molly Hunter is
7:25 7:28 following that Force
7:28 7:31 tonight today will go down in history as
7:31 7:34 a massive State intelligence failure the
7:34 7:36 Palestinian Hamas militant group
7:36 7:38 catching Israel both completely by
7:38 7:41 surprise and also deeply unprepared this
7:41 7:43 is extensive planning that would have to
7:43 7:45 take place over the course of many
7:45 7:47 months and the fact that the Israelis
7:47 7:48 seem to have been blind to it is
7:48 7:50 something that is going to I think lead
7:50 7:52 to an overhaul of the Israeli
7:52 7:55 intelligence Service uh
7:55 7:58 leadership Washington apparently also in
7:58 8:00 the dark once senior US military
8:00 8:03 official telling NBC news we were not
8:03 8:04 tracking
8:04 8:08 this us officials telling NBC news that
8:08 8:10 if Israel knew an attack was imminent
8:10 8:12 they didn't share it you're going to
8:12 8:14 have to question whether or not the
8:14 8:15 sources they have have been doubled back
8:15 8:17 against them and whether or not Hamas
8:17 8:19 was able to identify those individuals
8:19 8:21 and feed false information back to
8:21 8:22 Israel but also I think they have to
8:22 8:25 wonder about why their very Exquisite
8:25 8:27 sensitive technical collection systems
8:27 8:29 were not able to pick up anything
8:29 8:31 breaching the Border fence was
8:31 8:34 unprecedented seen here in Hamas video
8:34 8:36 but bursting into Southern Israel was a
8:36 8:39 shock to Tel Aviv and the timing is no
8:39 8:43 accident exactly 50 years ago the 1973
8:43 8:46 October Invasion by Egypt and Syria also
8:46 8:49 caught Israel completely off guard good
8:49 8:51 evening the war in the Middle East grew
8:51 8:53 in intensity
8:53 8:56 today over the last year a record number
8:56 8:58 of Palestinians killed and an uptick in
8:58 9:00 Israeli settler violence and Israeli
9:00 9:03 military raids in the occupied West Bank
9:03 9:05 for more than a year now experts have
9:05 9:07 been warning that things are reaching a
9:07 9:10 boiling point there was nowhere for the
9:10 9:14 story to go except a Breaking Point with
9:14 9:16 a a rightwing Israeli government that
9:16 9:19 doesn't recognize that Palestinians
9:19 9:23 exist but even with all the warning
9:23 9:26 signs no one saw the scale of today's
9:26 9:29 attack coming Molly Hunter NBC News
9:29 9:31 London the White House was also caught
9:31 9:34 off guard by the attacks President Biden
9:34 9:36 today addressing the American people and
9:36 9:38 Israelis about the
9:38 9:40 fighting that the United States stands
9:40 9:44 with Israel we will not ever fail to
9:44 9:45 have their
9:45 9:47 back Kelly O'Donnell is at the White
9:47 9:50 House Forest tonight Kelly good evening
9:50 9:52 Jose the president's words today
9:52 9:53 delivered a message in two very
9:53 9:55 different directions first one of
9:55 9:58 reassurance citing an unbreakable bond
9:58 9:59 between the United States and Israel
9:59 10:02 pledging support to its people and
10:02 10:04 promising to personally keep in close
10:04 10:07 touch with a now wartime prime minister
10:07 10:09 Benjamin Netanyahu after tensions in
10:09 10:12 their relationship the other message was
10:12 10:15 a stark warning to enemies of Israel
10:15 10:17 that they should not try to exploit this
10:17 10:19 moment of vulnerability to seek any
10:19 10:22 advantage joined by Secretary of State
10:22 10:24 today the President also said he spoke
10:24 10:26 to Jordan's King Abdullah and he would
10:26 10:30 work with other Arab Partners Jose
10:30 10:32 Kelly O'Donnell at the White House thank
10:32 10:34 you let's bring in Andrea Mitchell our
10:34 10:36 chief Foreign Affairs correspondent
10:36 10:39 Andrea there are always tensions in this
10:39 10:41 region but why did Hamas launch this
10:41 10:43 attack now well that's such a good
10:43 10:45 question Jose us officials have been
10:45 10:47 asked if Iran which funds Hamas may have
10:47 10:50 had a hand in this the reason to derail
10:50 10:52 recent momentum toward what would be an
10:52 10:54 historic diplomatic agreement between
10:54 10:56 Israel and Saudi Arabia a deal that
10:56 10:59 would have huge impacts in the region
10:59 11:00 President Biden has told prime minister
11:00 11:03 Netanyahu he could support it if it
11:03 11:06 protects Palestinian land rights Iran
11:06 11:08 however very much opposes the deal
11:08 11:10 Iran's president risei made that clear
11:10 11:13 to NBC's Lester Holt in an exclusive
11:13 11:15 interview last month telling him that
11:15 11:17 Saudi diplomatic recognition of Israel
11:17 11:20 will not create security for Iran a war
11:20 11:22 in the region of course will likely slow
11:22 11:24 that down or totally derail that deal
11:24 11:27 Jose and staying Andrea on Iran
11:27 11:29 Republicans are suggested that the
11:29 11:32 billions of dollars now being returned
11:32 11:34 to Iran as part of that prisoner swap
11:34 11:36 may have led to this well us officials
11:36 11:38 tonight are telling reporters that is
11:38 11:41 completely false that in fact Iran has
11:41 11:44 not yet drawn a penny any kind of money
11:44 11:47 out of that deposited uh $6 billion in
11:47 11:49 Carter's Central Bank where it is being
11:49 11:52 held and will be available once the US
11:52 11:54 Treasury assures it is being spent only
11:54 11:56 for humanitarian purposes none of it has
11:56 12:00 been spent so far Jose Andrew Mitchell
12:00 12:02 thank you here in the United States
12:02 12:04 police are tightening security around
12:04 12:07 synagogues and mosques and Airlines have
12:07 12:09 cancelled flights to Israel Liz CZ has
12:09 12:13 the very
12:13 12:16 latest tonight as war escalates in
12:16 12:19 Israel and the Gaza Strip concerns about
12:19 12:22 safety here in the US from New York to
12:22 12:24 Los Angeles police ramping up security
12:24 12:27 and patrols at synagogues moss and other
12:27 12:30 religious institutions our intelligence
12:30 12:33 desk is fully staffed as a result of the
12:33 12:36 recent events in Israel the Department
12:36 12:38 of Homeland Security also watching for
12:38 12:41 potential threats across the
12:41 12:44 country Richard PR is with a nonprofit
12:44 12:46 Jewish security organization who's with
12:46 12:49 about 30 New York area law enforcement
12:49 12:51 officials inside Israel near the war
12:51 12:54 zone what do you want people from
12:54 12:56 watching here in the US to know about
12:56 12:58 what's going on uh this is serious that
12:58 13:00 this is affecting uh uh regular people
13:00 13:02 this is indiscriminate Rockets are being
13:02 13:04 shot at us and we're forced to take
13:04 13:07 shelter in a bunker back at home Jewish
13:07 13:09 and Palestinian Americans watching the
13:09 13:12 violence unfolding with fear and
13:12 13:15 sadness I think that what they're doing
13:15 13:17 uh there I think Hamas coming and
13:17 13:20 attacking Israel is is an awful thing
13:20 13:23 it's it's sad it's more people dying I'm
13:23 13:25 I'm devastated actually there could be
13:25 13:27 you know repercussion here because
13:27 13:30 people's emotions people are emotional a
13:30 13:32 conflict thousands of miles away hitting
13:32 13:35 hard here in the
13:35 13:37 US and Liz it's not just law enforcement
13:37 13:40 taking precautions but Airlines as
13:40 13:43 well Jose that's right security is being
13:43 13:45 ramped up at synagogues like here in LA
13:45 13:47 but major airlines are also making
13:47 13:49 changes too some Airlines have cancelled
13:49 13:51 flights to Israel in fact one United
13:51 13:53 flight from SFO to Tel Aviv got turned
13:53 13:55 around mid-flight and went back to San
13:55 13:59 Francisco Jose Liz C in Los Angeles
13:59 14:01 thank you still ahead tonight flooding
14:01 14:03 across the Northeast as two storms
14:03 14:07 converge where it's heading next and the
14:07 14:10 Collision on a US Runway a shuttle bus
14:10 14:12 hits a plane we'll hear from a passenger
14:12 14:15 on board the
14:15 14:16 [Music]
14:16 14:19 aircraft we're tracking two storms that
14:19 14:21 have converged over the Northeast today
14:21 14:24 bringing flood threats for Millions
14:24 14:26 Kathy Park reports from a very wet New
14:26 14:27 York
14:27 14:30 City
14:30 14:33 tonight soaking rain gripping much of
14:33 14:34 the
14:34 14:37 Northeast in northern New Jersey flash
14:37 14:39 floods closing parts of the interstate
14:39 14:41 and stranding
14:41 14:43 drivers you can see firefighters
14:43 14:45 rescuing these people out of their van
14:45 14:48 stuck in high
14:48 14:51 water and danger on the roads near New
14:51 14:54 York City officials not taking any
14:54 14:57 chances as they mobilize resources ahead
14:57 15:00 of today's storm
15:00 15:05 oh on alert after this under last week's
15:05 15:07 catastrophic storm dumped a month's
15:07 15:10 worth of rain in a matter of hours some
15:10 15:13 areas still drying
15:13 15:15 out City officials preparing for what
15:15 15:18 they say could be a new normal the
15:18 15:19 increasing urgency of recent weather
15:19 15:21 events highlight that climate change is
15:21 15:24 here and it is a now issue today's wet
15:24 15:26 weather part of a onew punch the
15:26 15:29 remnants of tropical storm phpp swirling
15:29 15:31 around New England tonight setting its
15:31 15:34 sights on Maine the showers are coming
15:34 15:35 to an end here in New York and the
15:35 15:37 cooler air is moving in meanwhile the
15:37 15:39 wet weather will linger in New Hampshire
15:39 15:42 and Maine through tomorrow morning Jose
15:42 15:45 Cathy Park in New York thank you up next
15:45 15:47 the collision at O'Hare a shuttle bus
15:47 15:50 crashes into an airplane we'll hear from
15:50 15:54 those on board the aircraft
15:54 15:57 next tonight investigators are looking
15:57 15:58 into a collision at Chico Chicago's
15:58 16:01 O'Hare Airport a shuttle bus ran into a
16:01 16:03 passenger jetliner and there were
16:03 16:06 injuries Jesse kers
16:06 16:09 reports tonight yet another airport
16:09 16:11 scare is under scrutiny with people
16:11 16:13 injured and the aftermath apparently
16:13 16:15 captured on camera I believe it's
16:15 16:17 Wisconsin 6209 that got hit by the bus
16:17 16:19 do you need media assistance fire or
16:19 16:21 anything like that late Friday an Air
16:21 16:23 Wisconsin flight was taxing for
16:23 16:25 departure from Chicago's O'Hare
16:25 16:27 International Airport when the FAA says
16:27 16:29 it was struck by a passenger bus the
16:29 16:31 Chicago Fire Department describing the
16:31 16:34 Collision as minor contact American
16:34 16:36 Airlines says the incident involved an
16:36 16:38 employee bus and an American Eagle
16:38 16:41 flight Americans says six employees on
16:41 16:43 the bus went to the hospital for further
16:43 16:46 evaluation adding there were no reports
16:46 16:48 of injuries on board the plane so you
16:48 16:50 could feel the Collision yeah yeah we
16:50 16:52 could feel the Collision it kind of
16:52 16:54 jolted you forward a little bit um
